Australian Authorities Seize Over 100,000 Illegal Cockroaches From Commercial Breeder

Australia's Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water has seized over 100,000 live cockroaches, worth 200,000 Australian dollars ($142,000), from a commercial breeder in Bathurst, New South Wales state. The Madagascar hissing species is one of the world's largest cockroach, measuring 2 to 3 inches in length. The larger exotic species were likely being sold as a cost-effective reptile food due to their large size. The cockroches seized will be euthanized. The department warns of prosecutions against those caught with the invertebrates.
