Together, the two companies are meant to connect live site data with mine planning and autonomous fleet software.
Traditional mine surveys happen on fixed cycles — sometimes weeks apart. A lot changes between surveys: stockpile volumes shift, haul roads degrade, blast patterns alter the pit floor. Skycatch shortens that gap dramatically. Its drones fly large mine sites frequently and feed high-precision spatial data into AI tools that produce an updated digital model within hours, not weeks, according to Yahoo Finance.
That updated model then flows into planning software and fleet management systems. Mine managers can see fresher stockpile measurements, monitor haul-road conditions, and check whether actual digging progress matches the plan. For blasting crews, loading teams, and haulage planners, working from a current map rather than a stale one reduces costly mistakes and rework.
This is not Caterpillar's first technology acquisition. The company bought RPMGlobal, a mine planning software firm, in an earlier deal. Now Skycatch slots in as the data-capture layer that feeds RPMGlobal's planning tools and Cat MineStar, Caterpillar's fleet automation platform, according to Megaproject. Industry observers say tighter alignment between actual progress and plans could cut delays, improve load-and-haul efficiency, and make material reconciliation — tracking exactly where ore and waste went — far more accurate.
With Skycatch now inside Caterpillar, the integration work begins. The priority is connecting Skycatch's spatial data pipeline directly into Cat MineStar and RPMGlobal's planning tools so the data flows automatically rather than requiring manual exports. Discovery Alert noted that the acquisition signals Caterpillar's broader emphasis on data-driven solutions across the full mining value chain — from exploration and planning through to fleet dispatch and material reconciliation.
The mining industry has been slow to adopt real-time spatial intelligence at scale. Most sites still rely on periodic surveys and manual data handoffs. Caterpillar is betting that bundling drones, AI, planning software, and autonomous fleet control into one integrated offer will push the industry toward a new standard — one where the gap between site reality and digital plan shrinks from weeks to hours.
