Several Major Chain Stores and Restaurants Expected to Shutter Locations by End of 2026

A wave of store and restaurant closures is sweeping the United States in 2026, and the numbers are staggering. Chains like Wendy's, Starbucks, 7-Eleven, and Saks Global are shuttering hundreds of locations — with analysts projecting as many as 7,900 total store closures across the retail sector by year's end, according to Newsweek.
The closures began picking up speed in late 2025 and hit full force in January 2026. Liquidation sales, bankruptcy filings, and turnaround plans have reshaped the American retail landscape in just six months. Workers, shoppers, and entire communities are feeling the fallout.
Wendy's is closing between 298 and 358 restaurants in the first half of 2026 alone, Business Insider reported. Interim CEO Ken Cook called the targeted sites "consistently underperforming" and "a drag from a franchisee financial performance perspective." The chain framed the cuts as part of its "Project Fresh" turnaround strategy, launched in November 2025.
Starbucks is cutting roughly 500 North American stores by the end of fiscal 2026. CEO Brian Niccol said the company is closing sites where they "don't see a path to financial performance." Meanwhile, 7-Eleven is shutting 645 locations throughout the year, according to Fast Company — the largest single-brand closure count of 2026.
Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2026 after its troubled merger with Neiman Marcus collapsed. The filing immediately earmarked 65 stores for closure. CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck said the company would shift away from off-price retail to focus on "experiential luxury."
Francesca's, a women's boutique chain, announced a full liquidation of all 400 stores. CFO Curt Kroll said the move "provides a structured path to pursue the best outcome for all stakeholders," according to The Mirror US. Eddie Bauer also completed a full shutdown of its 174 physical stores by April 2026, moving to online-only sales.
New York City has become a symbol of the broader collapse. In June 2026, the Red Lobster in Times Square closed, along with a White Castle in Queens that had operated for 85 years, FOX 5 NY reported. REI also shut its flagship SoHo store. Experts say remote work permanently cut weekday foot traffic in dense urban areas.
"As markets and customer needs evolve, we must adapt," said REI CEO Mary Beth Laughton when announcing the SoHo closure. Analysts predict Manhattan's empty storefronts will be converted into residential spaces. The city's "High Street" retail model — once the envy of the world — is being dismantled block by block.
The human cost is mounting fast. The Wendy's closures alone are estimated to put 8,000 workers out of a job. Across the full retail sector, the projected 7,900 closures in 2026 could displace tens of thousands more. Retail analyst Neil Saunders warned that some chains are using "rising costs" as cover to cut stores that are simply not keeping up with e-commerce growth.
The problem goes beyond jobs. Walgreens is closing 500 stores and CVS is shutting 271, according to reporting on the sector's ongoing downsizing. Rural and low-income urban areas are losing access to pharmacies — their only nearby source for prescriptions and basic healthcare. TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles argued that "menu innovation and great marketing" are now the only ways legacy chains can survive a saturated, cost-squeezed market, Business Insider reported.
