Payward, Kraken's Parent, Plans Tokenized IPO Access for Retail Investors via xStocks

Payward, Kraken’s parent company, plans to let eligible retail investors access U.S.-listed IPO allocations at the offering price via its xStocks tokenized equities framework, aiming to narrow the traditional advantage held by institutions and wealthy clients. Through partner exchanges, customers will submit non-binding indications of interest during a pricing-band window in the weeks before a company lists; Payward aggregates demand across participating platforms and coordinates with underwriting syndicates to secure allocations. On listing day, finalized allocations are tokenized and distributed through investors’ existing exchange platforms, with each tokenized unit backed 1:1 by underlying shares held in custody by a regulated entity. Payward says the model addresses a historical gap where retail investors often can only buy after public trading begins, potentially missing the IPO price. The first tokenized IPO opportunities are expected to appear through Kraken and select xStocks Alliance members in the coming weeks as investors anticipate a busy pipeline of potential major debuts. Kraken is also expected to go public on Nasdaq in the second half of this year, though no specific date has been announced.
Kraken said xStocks tokens are interoperable across blockchains, “including Ethereum … and Solana,” which would let the tokenized IPO exposure move across different on-chain ecosystems rather than being confined to a single network.
xStocks’ track record is larger than just Kraken: the reporting notes xStocks has “surpassed $30 billion U.S. in transaction volumes” and “more than $6 billion U.S. settled onchain,” positioning it as an established venue for tokenized equities before this IPO-access feature.
Payward’s global head of Payward Services, Mark Greenberg, framed the change as a shift in who gets to participate in IPO pricing—saying, “Going public should mean public to everyone,” and arguing that for decades IPO pricing access depended on “geography and net worth,” including for a “retail investor in Medellín, Madrid, or Malaysia.”
The announcement arrives as retail attention builds around a potential “new crop” of high-profile debuts; the coverage specifically cited SpaceX and AI startups Anthropic and OpenAI as widely viewed potential IPO candidates “in the coming months,” which the company said could drive demand for pre-listing allocation access.
Beyond serving qualified Kraken users, Payward said the framework also provides a pathway for “international participants” to access IPO shares at initial offering valuations—suggesting the offering is designed to reduce cross-border constraints, not only domestic retail access.
