Massive Fire Destroys Medline Industries' 1 Million-Square-Foot California Facility
A massive fire tore through Medline Industries' 1.1 million-square-foot medical supply warehouse in Tracy, California on June 11, destroying the building completely. Associated Press reported zero injuries among staff or firefighters, but the facility — one of just three Medline centers serving all of Northern California — is a total loss.

With no water pressure and high winds pushing embers across the industrial park, firefighters were forced to shift to defensive operations by 3:00 PM.
Chief Bradley told reporters that the sprinkler failure shifted a massive burden onto city resources. Neighboring warehouses — including Amazon, FedEx, and Home Depot facilities — were evacuated. Embers carried south and ignited pallet storage areas at a nearby FedEx hub, according to City of Tracy incident updates.
Fire Spreads to Vegetation, Strains Regional Resources
At 2:20 PM, a separate 10.5-acre grass fire — called the "Lammers Fire" — broke out north of Interstate 580, pulling resources away from the warehouse blaze. Secondary spot fires also ignited near Schulte Road, Larch Road, and the Tracy Municipal Airport, ABC10 reported. Forward progress on the Lammers Fire stopped by 3:55 PM.
Tracy Police Sgt. Michael Richards said the wind made spreading embers the top concern. Promontory Parkway was shut down. No residential evacuations were ordered, and the fire stayed within the industrial zone, according to Associated Press.
Medline's Role in Medical Supply Chain Now at Risk
Medline Industries is the largest privately held maker and distributor of medical supplies in the United States. The Tracy warehouse served the entirety of Northern California. Tracy Mayor Dan Arriola noted the facility "was key in distributing medical supplies needed during the COVID-19 pandemic," ABC7 reported.
Healthcare providers like Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health could face disruptions to "just-in-time" supplies such as surgical kits and PPE, according to SFGATE. Medline's other hubs in Southern California and Nevada will likely try to absorb the shortfall, but logistical costs are expected to spike sharply in the near term.
Investigation Begins as Air Quality Warnings Spread
Fire crews remained on-site Friday morning to monitor hot spots. Investigators are looking at the roof as the fire's point of origin. Solar panels on the roof are one area of focus — they can block ventilation and create hard-to-reach hot spots for aerial ladders, according to City of Tracy incident notes cited by SFGATE.
Thick black smoke from burning medical plastics and packaging prompted air quality warnings across San Joaquin County. No toxic chemical leaks were initially reported. The failure of the private water pump system is expected to become a major focus of litigation and may trigger building code reviews in the county, Associated Press reported.
