Amazon achieves 'water positive' status in India ahead of 2030 goal, aiding conservation efforts

Amazon announced it has turned "water positive" in India, six years ahead of its 2030 global target, according to Reuters. The company says it now returns more water to Indian communities than it uses across all its operations — about 1.6 billion liters per year.
The announcement comes as tech giants face intense scrutiny over the water demands of their AI-driven data centers. India is a particularly sensitive battleground: it holds 18% of the world's population but only 4% of its freshwater resources, Yahoo Finance reported.
Amazon officially declared water-positive status in India on June 18, 2024. The company achieved this through a mix of strategies: using recycled water in data centers, desilting ponds, restoring wetlands, and funding roughly 500 community rainwater harvesting projects, Reuters reported. About 3.9 million people have benefited from Amazon's water and sanitation programs in the country.
Abhinav Singh, Amazon India's VP of Operations, said: "Water is a scarce resource in India... we are focused on being good stewards of water." AWS is also shifting its data centers in cities like Hyderabad to use treated sewage water for cooling instead of fresh groundwater, according to Yahoo Finance.
Data centers need huge amounts of water to cool their servers. The rise of AI has made this problem much worse. AWS plans to invest $12.7 billion in India's cloud infrastructure by 2030. That kind of expansion requires enormous resources in a country already running dry, Market Screener noted.
India faced one of its worst water crises in early 2024. Bengaluru, a major tech hub, saw severe shortages and relied on private water tankers to survive. The Indian government has since tightened rules on groundwater extraction, pushing companies to find alternatives fast.
Not everyone is convinced. Some environmental experts warn of a "spatial mismatch." A data center in water-stressed Hyderabad might drain local groundwater, while Amazon's replenishment project sits 100 miles away. The total math looks positive — but the local community still suffers, according to Yahoo Finance.
Critics label this approach "hydro-washing" — using offset projects to mask real local harm. Amazon, however, argues its projects holistically improve Indian water systems. AWS claims its Direct Evaporative Cooling technology cuts data center water use by 66% compared to traditional cooling systems.
Amazon is not alone in making water pledges. Google and Microsoft have both set 2030 water-positive targets. By hitting the goal early in India, Amazon gains a clear narrative edge in what analysts call the "Green AI" race, Reuters reported. Market analysts describe the move as "shrewd de-risking" — locking in the right to operate before droughts or protests shut things down.
For the Indian government, Amazon's self-regulation is a welcome relief. Amazon's $12.7 billion investment is projected to add $23.3 billion to India's GDP by 2030. Officials see corporate water projects as reducing the burden on the state — a trade-off they appear willing to accept, according to Yahoo Finance.
