Charlie Hunnam Leads Sons of Anarchy Cast in New FX Meta-Thriller Series

The cast lineup for Legends includes Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi, all set to play themselves — with additional cast to be announced.
Legends was developed by Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Groff also serving as an executive producer.
The project has been in development for at least three years at FX before Groff joined the team.
Behind-the-scenes producers on Legends include Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn as executive producers.
FX Entertainment President Nick Grad described Legends as 'a love letter to the series' and 'a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.'
FX has ordered a limited series called Legends that reunites much of the Sons of Anarchy cast to play themselves in a meta-thriller. Charlie Hunnam, who starred in the original show, conceived the project and will lead it alongside executive producer Jonathan Groff. The premise centers on a fan convention where the actors confront a real-world threat, blurring life and art in a self-referential setup that sidesteps the deaths of their original characters.
The cast includes Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi, all playing themselves. FX Entertainment President Nick Grad called Legends a "love letter to the series" and "a fun meta twist on what fans think they know." The show will stream on FX and Hulu, with FX Productions and 20th Television producing. Kurt Sutter, the original series creator, is not involved.
Playing themselves lets the actors return without reviving characters who died in the original series. Sons of Anarchy killed off major characters in its seven-season run, ending in 2014. A straightforward revival would demand explaining their deaths. Instead, Legends uses a fan convention setting where the actors meet as real people, not characters. This approach creates a fresh angle while honoring the show's legacy.
The meta-thriller premise reframes expectations. Fans know the Sons of Anarchy universe intimately. By putting the cast as themselves facing a real threat, Legends subverts what viewers think they know. Nick Grad said the show offers "a fun meta twist," meaning it plays with fans' knowledge of both the show and the actors. This creates surprise and fresh storytelling possibilities without retreading old character arcs.
Charlie Hunnam has been shaping Legends since before Jonathan Groff joined as executive producer. Hunnam recently earned Emmy nominations for his work on Monster: The Ed Gein Story, showing his range beyond Jax Teller. The Legends project has been in development for at least three years at FX. Hunnam collaborates with Groff as co-developer, bringing fresh creative energy to the reunion concept.
Behind the scenes, Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn serve as executive producers alongside Hunnam and Groff. This production team has shaped Legends into a limited series order rather than a full-season commitment. That structure suggests the creators wanted to tell a tight, focused story. It also reflects FX's confidence in the concept without overextending the reunion premise.
Kurt Sutter created the original Sons of Anarchy and steered it through seven seasons. He is not involved with Legends. This marks a significant creative shift. Charlie Hunnam taking the helm as conceiver and star signals new leadership for the franchise. The move allows Hunnam to explore the Sons of Anarchy world on his own terms, separate from Sutter's original vision.
Legends launches nearly a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended. The long gap gives Hunnam and his team distance to reimagine the universe. A fan convention setting feels distinctly modern and reflective. Rather than continuing the original drama or creating a direct spinoff, Legends opts for this meta-fictional approach. It lets the cast and creators celebrate what came before while doing something entirely new.
