Packers' Micah Parsons Targets Mid-October Return, Prioritizing Full ACL Recovery Over Early Comeback

Packers All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons says his recovery from a torn ACL and additional meniscus damage suffered Dec. 14 is still on track but will keep him from being ready for the start of the 2026 season. Parsons reported he is about five months into a roughly nine-month recovery window, adding that doctors performed a “clean up” procedure on his meniscus, and he stressed that the team is following a strict longevity-focused approach rather than a fast return. With that timeline, he is expected to begin on the PUP list and miss at least the first four games, which would likely push his earliest return to around mid-October. The Packers, coming off a finish that included losing their final five games without Parsons, will need to compensate for his absence early while his rehab continues through October. Parsons reiterated his goal is to complete the season and return for playoffs, and he expects to return only when he can avoid any relapse or re-injury risk.
Parsons said his approach is about only returning when he feels fully ready, telling reporters: “It’s about knowing when to go. And it’s all about feeling great,” adding that the organization “doesn’t… want me to go out there if I’m not at 100 percent and risk re-injury and lose me for the year.”
In discussing the team’s nine-month framework, Parsons emphasized the medical rationale, saying: “through the research and the data, there’s no good outcomes with players coming back early from [a torn] ACL,” particularly “if you add in all the other things that get fixed up.”
Parsons clarified what he means by the “nine-month rule,” saying he’s aiming for “a pure nine months no football,” and Channel 3000 also noted that while the NFL changed PUP rules to allow practice after missing two games, those players still “must still sit out four games before being activated from the PUP list.”
Channel 3000 reported a contrast within the organization: although GM Brian Gutekunst previously said Parsons was ahead of schedule, coach Matt LaFleur said last week he expected Parsons to begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list.
Sporting News went further on the schedule implications of a mid-October return, stating a targeted October return would “guarantee” Parsons missing the Packers’ first three games—vs. the Vikings, Jets, and Falcons—and it described him as unlikely to be available for the Oct. 4 Week 4 game at the Buccaneers.
