Not everyone is sold on the approach. The Athletic called the Jenner deal "high-risk, high-reward," flagging his age (33) and injury history with back and shoulder issues as concerns over a four-year term. Analytics-focused writers also pointed to Desharnais' Corsi-for percentage below 46%, a sign he struggles with puck possession.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman pushed back, noting Desharnais was the "most sought-after" shutdown defenseman on the market this summer. For Washington, which was swept by Carolina in the playoffs, the priority was clear: get bigger, get harder to play against, and protect what remains of the Alex Ovechkin window.
