Athletics' J.T. Ginn No-Hits Nationals Through Six Innings, Eyeing First Career Complete Game

Oakland Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn is working on a no-hitter through six innings against the Washington Nationals on Saturday night, according to Yahoo Sports. Ginn has retired 18 of the 21 batters he has faced and has racked up seven strikeouts. The Athletics lead 6-0.
Ginn entered the game with a 3.67 ERA and has never thrown a complete game in his three-year major league career, SF Gate noted. Three walks are the only blemishes on an otherwise dominant performance so far.
The closest the Nationals came to a hit was in the fifth inning. Dylan Crews hit what appeared to be an infield single to shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer. The Athletics challenged the call on the field, according to SF Gate. After a replay review, the call was overturned and Crews was ruled out.
That overturned call kept the no-hitter alive. Without the successful challenge, Washington would have had a baserunner reach on a hit. The replay system, introduced to prevent exactly these kinds of errors, proved decisive in one of the night's biggest moments.
Ginn has thrown 77 pitches through six innings, with 49 of them going for strikes, according to Click Orlando. That works out to roughly 13 pitches per inning — an efficient pace that gives the Athletics bullpen options if he tires late. The seven strikeouts show he has had sharp stuff all night.
Washington's only baserunners came via three walks, Yahoo Sports reported. No Nationals hitter has made solid contact for a hit. Ginn has kept the ball in the zone and let his defense work behind him.
The Athletics have given Ginn plenty of run support. Oakland leads 6-0 through six innings, according to WD Times. That kind of lead takes the pressure off and allows the manager to keep Ginn in the game longer as he chases history.
Ginn has pitched in the major leagues for three seasons but has never thrown a complete game, Lancaster Online reported. A no-hitter would be a massive leap — skipping a complete game win entirely and going straight to one of baseball's rarest achievements. No-hitters happen fewer than 10 times per season across the entire league.
Three innings remain. Ginn will need nine more outs to complete the no-hitter. The pressure will grow with every batter he faces. History is within reach, but nothing in baseball is certain until the final out.
