India Secures Javelin Silver and Bronze Medals at Asian Games

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won the Asian Games men’s javelin title with an 88.55-meter throw; he has also recorded a world-leading 92.62 meters this season. India’s Yashvir Singh took silver with a personal-best 85.72 meters, and Rohit Yadav won bronze with 84.35 meters, giving India a double podium despite defending champion Neeraj Chopra’s injury-related absence. Yashvir improved on his Commonwealth Games bronze, while Rohit’s medal marked a return after serious elbow surgery. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth with 80.29 meters.
Pathirage began with a 73.53-meter throw—his only sub-80-meter result of the season—before moving into the lead with 88.33 meters in round four and sealing the win with 88.55 meters in his final attempt.
Pathirage arrived in Nagoya after winning the Commonwealth Games, the Diamond League final and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship; his 92.62-meter throw made him the only thrower to exceed 92 meters that season and only the fourth in history to do so in a year.
Yashvir opened with 83.56 meters to take the early lead, while Rohit briefly moved into first place with his 84.35-meter third attempt; Pathirage’s fourth-round throw later pushed both Indians down the standings before Yashvir’s final-round personal best secured silver.
The Associated Press placed the result in a broader regional context: javelin has become a rare source of major international athletics success for India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, countries that have had little Olympic success outside the event and, for India, field hockey.
