Tesla Pushes Roadster SpaceX Thruster Demo to August, Targets 0-60 in One Second

A report says Tesla’s SpaceX-limited Roadster would use a multi-thruster layout with “ten in total” plus propellant, packaged “into the space normally occupied by the back seats,” and that the company’s performance target is a roughly “zero-to-sixty…in roughly a second.”
The delays are tied to Tesla/SpaceX development of the A71 system, which sources describe as safer/easier to package for a road car because the gas is “simply pushed via nozzles rather than burned up, as in a conventional rocket engine.”
Electrek reports that at Tesla’s November 2025 shareholder meeting, Elon Musk set the April 1, 2026 demo date and said it gave him “deniability,” while also later shifting production timing to “2027-2028” as the schedule slipped repeatedly.
Tesla engineering leadership has been quoted discussing upcoming Roadster demos: Lars Moravy said, “Roadster is definitely in development… We did talk about it… We are gearing up for a super cool demo… We showed Elon some cool demos last week of the tech we’ve been working on, and he got a little excited,” suggesting the company is emphasizing “mind-blowing” demos rather than only the final vehicle.
Tesla has pushed its next-generation Roadster public demo to August 2026 or later, according to The Information. The delay marks at least the fourth major schedule slip since CEO Elon Musk set an April 1, 2026 unveiling date last fall. Giga Texas in Austin is expected to host the event.
The centerpiece of the demo is the SpaceX-developed "A71" cold-gas thruster system. Tesla VP of Engineering Lars Moravy recently said the team is "gearing up for a super cool demo" after engineers showed Musk early thruster hardware in late April. The vehicle has been in development since its prototype debut in November 2017 — nearly nine years ago.
The A71 is a cold-gas thruster package — meaning it pushes compressed air or nitrogen through nozzles rather than burning fuel like a rocket. Electrek reports the system is safer to package in a road car for exactly that reason. The gas tank sits where the back seats would normally go.
Tesla is targeting ten thrusters in total on the SpaceX-edition Roadster. The goal is a 0-60 mph sprint in roughly one second, according to TechEBlog. The thrusters would also improve braking and cornering by pushing the car into the road at high speed. Tesla plans two variants: a "SpaceX" model with the full thruster kit and a base model without it.
Tesla first showed the Roadster prototype in 2017, promising production by 2020. That date came and went. Musk set a new public demo for April 1, 2026, and even joked at Tesla's November 2025 shareholder meeting that the "April Fool's" date gave him "deniability," Electrek reported. Production has since been pushed to 2027–2028.
The April target slipped to "maybe a month or so" on Tesla's Q1 2026 earnings call. Now Carscoops reports that window has slipped again to August or later. Engineers showed Musk an early A71 demo in late April, suggesting the thruster tech — not the car itself — is the main bottleneck holding up any public showing.
Moravy said on the Ride the Lightning podcast that the team "showed Elon some cool demos last week of the tech we've been working on, and he got a little excited," per Teslarati. That language points to the August event being more of a technology showcase than a traditional car reveal — a "mind-blowing demo" first, production vehicle second.
For reservation holders, the excitement is harder to share. Standard model deposits were $50,000, while the limited Founders Series required $250,000 — paid nearly a decade ago. Carscoops has called the Roadster a "fairytale," noting this is roughly the eighth major timeline shift since 2017. Critics on Reddit have called it a "case study in broken promises."
The Roadster serves as Tesla's "halo car" — a flagship meant to signal engineering ambition while the company focuses on higher-volume products like the Cybercab. Carscoops notes that Musk has called it potentially "the last manually driven car" Tesla ever makes. A strong August demo would defend the brand's performance credibility at a sensitive moment.
But the path after any demo is far from clear. A car capable of brief lift-off using high-pressure gas nozzles would face serious scrutiny from US safety regulators, Teslarati warns. If August goes well, the regulatory clock — not just the engineering clock — starts ticking next.
