The company, spun out of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in 2023, is building a stellarator-based fusion reactor. A stellarator uses powerful magnets to hold super-hot plasma in place — the key step needed to produce fusion energy. The funding puts Proxima on a path toward a working commercial plant by the late 2030s.
Alphabet, Google's parent company, joined RWE — one of Germany's biggest energy firms — as strategic investors in the round, according to Benzinga. New backers also include KfW Capital, SPRIND, and Burda Principal Investments. Existing investors topped up their stakes as well.
