Walmart and Constellation Announce First Nuclear Power Deal for Illinois Operations

Walmart has signed its first-ever nuclear power purchase agreement, securing roughly 176 megawatts of emissions-free electricity from Constellation Energy's Dresden Clean Energy Center in Illinois, according to Yahoo Finance. The deal spans two 15-year terms starting in 2029 and 2030, making Walmart one of the first major retailers — not just tech giants — to lock in long-term nuclear power.
The agreement includes 30 MW of new capacity through efficiency upgrades, called uprates, at the existing Dresden plant. That extra power will help supply Walmart's high-tech perishable distribution center in Belvidere, Illinois, TipRanks reported.
Until now, nuclear power purchase agreements were mostly signed by tech companies like Microsoft and Google. Those firms need steady, round-the-clock power for energy-hungry data centers. Walmart's deal changes that picture. It shows that large retailers with big logistics and refrigeration operations are now willing to make the same long-term bets on nuclear energy, according to Yahoo Finance.
Analysts at Morgan Stanley called the deal a sign that the nuclear PPA market is "maturing" and moving into the mainstream of corporate energy buying. They suggested other Fortune 500 retailers with heavy cold-chain needs — like Amazon or Target — could follow Walmart's lead.
Rather than construct a brand-new plant — a process that takes decades and billions of dollars — Constellation will squeeze an extra 30 MW out of Dresden by upgrading existing equipment. This approach, known as an uprate, delivers new clean energy onto the grid far faster than traditional construction. The 30 MW alone is enough to power roughly 24,000 homes.

This deal did not happen by accident. In 2021, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. That law gave nuclear plants like Dresden carbon credits to stay open. Without it, Dresden was headed for early closure. The law's support, combined with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewing Dresden's operating licenses through 2049 and 2051, gave both companies the legal runway needed to sign a 15-year contract, according to Yahoo Finance.
Walmart has also set a goal to facilitate 10 gigawatts of new clean energy projects by 2030. This 176 MW deal represents roughly 1.76% of that global target. Latriece Watkins, Walmart's Executive Vice President for Walmart U.S., said the agreement gives the company "certainty in energy costs" while still hitting its sustainability goals.
Not everyone is cheering. Some clean energy advocates say 146 MW of the deal comes from power Dresden was already generating. They argue that buying existing nuclear output is "shuffling electrons" rather than truly adding new clean energy to the grid — unlike building a new wind farm. Constellation and Walmart counter that the 30 MW uprate does create genuinely new, emissions-free power that would not otherwise exist.
Local environmental groups in Illinois have also raised concerns about long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Dresden site. Still, the broader narrative in Illinois has shifted toward what experts are calling "pragmatic decarbonization" — accepting nuclear's carbon-free output as a bridge while renewable capacity grows, TipRanks noted.
