Bankrupt former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio auctions 2003 World Cup medal.

Former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio is auctioning his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal, estimated at £50,000 to £80,000, amid ongoing bankruptcy and financial difficulties. The 54-year-old was declared bankrupt after his divorce and the sale of the couple’s Richmond home, and was ordered to use his share of the proceeds toward an overdrawn directors’ loan and other debts. The auction also includes his 2007 World Cup runners-up medal, other international and club awards, and England and British & Irish Lions caps; the collection could raise about £180,000.
England beat Australia 20–17 in the 2003 World Cup final in Sydney on November 22, with Jonny Wilkinson’s extra-time drop goal securing the victory.
Budds auctioneers said the winner’s medal was presented to Dallaglio in Sydney after the final, describing the win as “the pinnacle of world rugby” and “the singular greatest achievement in English rugby history.” The auction was scheduled for October 13.
The listed estimates include £5,000 for Dallaglio’s 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal, £8,000 each for medals from his two European Cup wins and three league titles with Wasps, and £5,500 for his British & Irish Lions cap.
In his first major interview since being declared bankrupt, Dallaglio said he had sought therapy after his divorce, that bankruptcy left him wallowing in “self-pity,” and admitted: “I could’ve done things a lot better.”
