Nintendo's Star Fox 64 Remake for Switch 2 Arrives June 25, Mixing Nostalgia with Modern Presentation

Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 exclusive Star Fox (a remake of Star Fox 64) is due June 25, and multiple preview hands-ons found it largely preserves the original’s cockpit combat and feel while upgrading presentation with new, more cinematic cutscenes, higher-end graphics, and a notably smooth frame rate. Reviewers were divided on what that means for freshness: some describe the story and script as an expanded, blockbuster-style retelling with top-tier voice acting and direction, while others feel it remains a familiar “old with new pieces” return to the 1997 game’s core gameplay. Controls were widely praised as more intuitive than in memory, with a straightforward scheme and flexible input options including Joy-Con mouse-style aiming for single or co-op play. Beyond flight, one major Switch 2 hook is a VTuber-style mode that repurposes GameChat’s camera and face tracking so players can appear as the Star Fox or Star Wolf crew, improving on the system’s earlier camera drawbacks. Even so, some hands-on accounts note limitations in camera output quality and that the flight mechanics can still feel dated or only minimally changed for certain players. Overall, the previews suggest Nintendo is leaning on Star Fox’s nostalgia, plus stronger production values and new handheld features, to make the remake feel like a modern event.
Gizmodo reports the GameChat/VTuber camera output is capped at a “max 1080p resolution,” and Nintendo’s first-party camera can look “washed out,” with an auto head-detection/zoom feature that “reduced the image quality even further.”
Destructoid lists a concrete control mapping from its Treehouse-guided tutorial: “Left stick” for pitch, triggers for tilt/barrel rolls, “A” to fire, “B” to brake, “Y” for bombs, and “X” to boost—plus support for Joy-Con mouse mode for single-player or co-op aiming/firing.
IGN describes specific story/cutscene beats in the “blockbuster” retelling, including Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy gathered around a hologram of “General Pepper” receiving mission orders—framing the presentation as closer to “Star Wars: A New Hope with animals.”
GameSpot’s preview notes the remake retains Star Fox 64’s core mechanics and item/ring logic: silver rings refill Arwing health, while collecting three gold rings increases shield capacity; taking enough damage can lose a wing, causing the ship to drag, though the preview says the drag felt “incredibly minimal.”
CNET highlights presentation-specific design choices beyond general “new cutscenes,” writing that some fans were “freaked out” by the “hairy/feathery” new character designs, while the preview author says they provide a “visceral, slightly feral animal feel.”
