Lamine Yamal Recovers from Hamstring Injury, Eyes World Cup Debut for Spain

Lamine Yamal will not travel with Spain to Puebla, Mexico, for their final pre-World Cup friendly against Peru on June 8. The 18-year-old Barcelona forward is staying at Spain's base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to continue recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in late April, according to Field Level Media.
Spain's World Cup opener against Cape Verde is just one week away, on June 15 in Atlanta. Head coach Luis de la Fuente has said publicly, "I have no doubt he will be ready," but Spanish sports outlets are describing Yamal as a serious doubt for at least the first two group matches, according to The News Tribune.
Yamal hurt his left hamstring on April 22, suffering a partial tear of the biceps femoris muscle while playing for FC Barcelona against Celta Vigo, according to The State. He has not played for club or country since. He also missed Spain's first warm-up match, a 1-1 draw against Iraq on June 4 in A Coruña.
On June 7, Yamal and fellow forward Nico Williams were seen training separately from the rest of the squad at the Baylor School in Chattanooga. Williams is also nursing an injury. A Barcelona specialist, physiotherapist Fernando Galán, is embedded with the Spanish federation to oversee Yamal's recovery, according to Bellingham Herald.
This is not the first time Barcelona and the Spanish federation have disagreed over Yamal's workload. Barcelona officials grew frustrated when Yamal aggravated a groin injury during an international break in late 2025. The club's priority is his long-term health, and reports suggest Barcelona could pause his involvement if he reports any discomfort during training in Tennessee, according to The Olympian.
Spanish sports outlet Diario AS reports that Barcelona has pushed for a strict minute cap on Yamal's early tournament play — no more than 15 minutes against Cape Verde and no more than 60 minutes against Saudi Arabia. De la Fuente has framed the decision to keep Yamal in Chattanooga as a smart, strategic choice rather than a medical emergency.
The 1-1 draw against Iraq exposed how much Spain depends on Yamal. Spanish media described the team's performance as "disjointed" without him and Williams on the flanks. De la Fuente may need to rely on Ferran Torres or emerging forward Víctor Muñoz if Yamal cannot start against Cape Verde, according to Field Level Media.
Failing to beat Cape Verde would pile enormous pressure on Spain heading into their second group match against Saudi Arabia. FIFA and broadcasters consider Yamal one of the tournament's marquee stars. He finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or vote and has scored 6 goals in 25 appearances for Spain's national team.
Spain's base camp at the Baylor School sits roughly 90 minutes by road from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where the Cape Verde match will be played. Yamal is expected to rejoin the main group for full training on June 11, giving him four days to prove his fitness before the tournament kicks off, according to The News Tribune.
De la Fuente has described Yamal as "touched by God's wand" and "born for this" moment. Whether the teenager takes the field on June 15 could define Spain's entire tournament. The defending European champions enter as one of the top-ranked sides in the world and are expected to advance from Group H with ease — but only if their best player is healthy.
