Columbus Crew defeat Inter Miami 2-1 after scoring a late stoppage-time winner

Columbus Crew beat Inter Miami 2-1 after Jamal Thiaré scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time, converting the rebound from Brais Méndez’s shot. Lionel Messi had equalized for Miami with a free kick from a tight angle, his 21st MLS goal of the season. His goal brought his career free-kick tally to 76, two short of the record cited in one report. The defeat further dented Miami’s hopes of catching Eastern Conference leaders Nashville, while Columbus remained in contention for a playoff place.
Josef Martínez opened the scoring for Columbus from the penalty spot in the 28th minute. It was his first goal for the Crew after signing on Aug. 13.
Miami briefly appeared to take the lead when substitute David Ayala scored, but the goal was disallowed because he was ruled fractionally offside.
Columbus had 46% possession but outshot Miami 14-5, including 7-3 on target. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo made five saves.
Miami midfielder Santiago Morales was sent off in stoppage time, receiving a yellow card in the fourth minute and a red card about two minutes later.
