Pope's Sanctuary Fresco Unveiled

Pope returns to historic sanctuary to unveil a new fresco depicting his post-election prayer.

Pope Leo XIV returned to the sanctuary where he prayed after his election, a permanent sign of his devotion to the place. The new pope unveiled a portrait of himself praying at the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano, a medieval village south of Rome. The sanctuary, managed by Augustinian friars, has been a place of pilgrimage since the 15th century and Leo's namesake, Pope Leo XIII, elevated it to a minor basilica and expanded the adjacent convent in the early 1900s. During his homily at the basilica, Leo recalled his first visit to the site in 2025.
