Botha **stepped down as Sequoia’s leader late last year**, before joining SpaceX’s board.
Botha and Elon Musk briefly overlapped at PayPal in 2000: Botha began at PayPal in **March 2000** (per his LinkedIn), and Musk was pushed out as CEO in **September 2000**.
Multiple reports tie the board appointment to SpaceX’s IPO completed on **June 12, 2026**, described as the **largest IPO ever recorded**.
SpaceX has added Roelof Botha, the former head of Sequoia Capital, to its board of directors as an independent director. The move came less than a week after SpaceX completed the largest IPO in history, raising $75 billion on June 12, 2026, when shares opened at $150 and closed at $160.95 — a 19% gain on its first day of trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX, according to CNBC.
SpaceX disclosed the appointment in a Form 8-K filing on June 17. Botha will serve on the board's audit committee immediately, Crypto Briefing reported. The company's valuation now stands near $2.3 trillion — making it one of the most valuable public companies on earth.
SpaceX's SEC filing says Botha was elected as a "Common Stock Director" on June 16, filling an existing vacancy. He becomes the eighth member of the board. The filing states he "brings extensive public company experience along with a deep audit committee background" and has served on "the boards and audit committees of numerous public companies," according to Value The Markets.
Botha stepped down as Sequoia's managing partner in late 2025 before taking the SpaceX seat. Sequoia has backed SpaceX since 2019, when the company was valued at $36 billion. The firm holds an estimated 1.5% stake, having put in at least $1.8 billion across several funding rounds, Value The Markets reported.
Botha and Musk share history going back to early 2000. Botha joined PayPal in March 2000 as Director of Corporate Development. Musk was pushed out as PayPal's CEO in September 2000. Botha later served as PayPal's CFO and took the company public in 2002. His addition makes him the third "PayPal Mafia" member in SpaceX leadership, joining Musk and venture capitalist Luke Nosek, Crypto Briefing reported.
On listing day, Musk told a crowd at SpaceX's Hawthorne headquarters: "We are taking the fiction out of science fiction. Today, we make humanity multi-planetary." President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, speaking from the Nasdaq floor, added: "Today, we make history again. We have a history of making history."
SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 per share on June 11, raising $74.4 billion and topping Saudi Aramco's 2019 record. Bankers then exercised the "greenshoe" option — a tool that lets underwriters sell extra shares if demand is high — pushing total capital raised to roughly $85.7 billion. Shares have since climbed further, trading near $212 in premarket sessions on June 17, according to Zamin.
Despite going public, Musk retains 82%–85% of the company's voting power. That "controlled company" structure has drawn criticism from pension funds in California and New York, who sent a letter decrying "super-voting shares" and rules that limit shareholder lawsuits, Value The Markets reported. Botha's role on the audit committee is widely seen as a step toward meeting the governance standards public markets demand.
Analysts view the Botha appointment as a clear signal that SpaceX wants seasoned financial oversight as it adjusts to life as a public company. Nasdaq listing rules require independent directors with audit experience, and Botha fits that profile directly. Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire posted on X: "I believe SpaceX is the most important company of all time."
One flag has emerged. SEC filings note that a family member of Botha has worked on SpaceX's enterprise operations team since January 2025, earning over $120,000 a year. SpaceX says the pay is "commensurate with peers," but governance watchdogs say the detail warrants attention given Botha's seat on the audit committee, Crypto Briefing reported.
