Zcash's Ironwood Upgrade Aims to Verify Supply, May Face Mainnet Delays

A turnstile-like supply accounting checkpoint will govern funds leaving the Orchard pool to prevent more ZEC from exiting than entered, enabling verifiable verification of Zcash's circulating supply.
The Ironwood upgrade replaces zcashd with a Z3 stack, consisting of Zebra for operating a network node, Zaino for supplying blockchain data to applications, and Zallet for wallet-related services.

Zcash's next major network upgrade, called Ironwood, is targeting a mainnet launch around July 21, 2026 — but developers are warning it could slip. CoinTelegraph reported that Shielded Labs, the organization leading much of Zcash's engineering, flagged that exchanges, mining pools, and wallets may not have enough time to prepare for the sweeping software changes.
The upgrade is a big deal for Zcash. It replaces the old node software, called zcashd, with a new stack. It also adds a mechanism to let users verify exactly how much ZEC is in circulation — something the network has struggled to prove in the past, according to Bloomingbit.
The Ironwood upgrade swaps out zcashd entirely. In its place comes three new tools: Zebra runs the network node, Zaino feeds blockchain data to apps, and Zallet handles wallet services. Together, these form what developers call the Z3 stack. According to MEXC, the transition marks one of the most significant infrastructure shifts in Zcash's history.
Testing is already underway. Two separate teams — Valar Group and the Zcash Foundation — have built independent versions of the consensus rules. Having two independent implementations is a key safety check. Valar Group's version has already entered a formal security audit, Head Topics reported.
One of Ironwood's headline features is a supply checkpoint called a turnstile. It works like a gate: no more ZEC can leave the new Orchard private pool than entered it. This stops any hidden or counterfeit coins from slipping out undetected. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox has pushed hard for this fix, pointing to past doubts about whether Zcash's supply figures could be trusted.
Once Ironwood activates at block height 3,417,100, users will be able to independently check the total circulating supply of ZEC for the first time. Hokanews noted that restoring this verifiability is a core goal of the upgrade, directly addressing long-standing concerns in the crypto community about Zcash's privacy architecture hiding supply inflation.
On the user side, developers have made real progress on wallet migration. Moving ten notes — small units of private transaction data — now takes about 2.5 minutes. That is a major improvement over earlier benchmarks. Developers are also releasing a desktop wallet fork so users can test migration on the testnet before the mainnet launch, according to MEXC.
Hardware wallet support is also advancing. Keystone devices can now update their firmware to test migration on the testnet. The new system supports signing 11 or more transactions with a single QR code scan. That makes multi-signature transactions — where multiple parties must approve a transfer — much faster and easier to handle.
The July 4 testnet activation is still the plan, with mainnet to follow around July 21. But Shielded Labs has been clear: those dates could move. Exchanges, mining pools, and wallet providers all need to update their software before the switch. If they are not ready, a delay is on the table. CoinTelegraph noted that core developers are prioritizing security over speed.
Formal security audits and ZIP specifications — the technical documents that define how the upgrade works — are still in progress. Developers say testnet results will guide final timing decisions. Bloomingbit reported that the team views a potential delay not as a failure, but as a sign that safety is being taken seriously before one of Zcash's most consequential upgrades goes live.
