Perth Authorities Issue Urgent Shark Warnings After Whale Carcass Spotted Offshore

Authorities have issued shark warnings for Perth’s City Beach after a whale carcass was reported offshore, warning it could attract sharks closer to shore. SharkSmart alerts reported several sharks near the beach, including two white sharks, while agencies monitored the area and advised people to exercise caution and obey any beach closures. The warning follows a fatal shark attack at nearby Sorrento Beach 10 days earlier.
SharkSmart reported two white sharks, measuring 5 metres and 4 metres, about 10 metres offshore roughly an hour after the whale carcass was spotted. It also recorded a 3.5-metre shark of unknown species reported by a Surf Life Saving helicopter and another 2.5-metre shark circling 10 metres offshore.
Authorities did not know the whale carcass’s size or species, and the Town of Cambridge was managing it.
Monitoring included a patrol boat between South City and Floreat beaches, a Westpac rescue helicopter, and a Surf Life Saving WA 4WD patrol vehicle.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised the public to report shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
