Illinois AD Josh Whitman Secures Multi-Million Dollar Extension Through 2039

The contract allows up to three one-year extensions through 2038-39 if triggering events related to football and men's basketball competitive success are satisfied.
Total base compensation over the extension is $26.1 million, with the potential to reach $31.1 million when including annual retention payments of $500,000 per year.
The agreement includes a non-compete clause with all other colleges and universities during the contract term.
Whitman is the fifth-longest-tenured athletic director among Power Four schools.
Illinois’ program milestones during his tenure include a men’s basketball Final Four, the football program’s 19 wins in the last two seasons, and revenue surpassing $200 million for a fourth straight year.
The University of Illinois has locked in athletic director Josh Whitman through at least 2036 — and possibly 2039. The university's Board of Trustees approved a 10-year deal worth $26.1 million in base salary, with bonuses and retention payments that could push total value above $31 million, according to Chicago Tribune.
The deal starts at $2.15 million in base salary for 2026-27 and rises by $100,000 each year, reaching $3.15 million in 2035-36. If Illinois football and men's basketball hit certain performance targets, Whitman could earn up to three extra years, stretching the deal all the way to 2038-39, Fox Illinois reported.
On top of the rising base salary, Whitman gets a $500,000 annual retention bonus every year. That brings the potential total to $31.1 million over the extension. He also receives a one-time $500,000 signing bonus and can earn up to $500,000 more each year in performance bonuses, according to BND.
The contract also includes a buyout cap of $15.5 million — that is 100% of his remaining base salary. A non-compete clause bars Whitman from taking a similar job at any other college or university while the deal is active, Chicago Tribune reported.
The deal has a built-in growth trigger. Each of the three possible one-year extensions beyond 2036 depends on Illinois football and men's basketball hitting specific competitive benchmarks. Fox Illinois described it as a 13-year deal if all the goals are met — running from 2026 all the way to 2039.
The extension mechanics reward on-field and on-court success directly. Illinois does not have to renegotiate. Each benchmark year that is cleared simply adds another year to the back end of the contract, News Channel 20 noted.
Whitman has been Illinois' athletic director since 2016. He is now the fifth-longest-tenured AD among Power Four schools. Under his watch, the men's basketball program reached the Final Four. The football team posted 19 wins over the last two seasons alone, according to Fox Illinois.
Illinois athletics revenue topped $200 million for the fourth straight year. That streak of financial growth was a key reason the university moved to lock Whitman in long-term. The Board of Trustees cited his role as a stabilizing force for the program, BND reported.
