Netflix Orders 'Sid & Zoey,' a YA Supernatural Mystery from Abrams and Blumhouse

Bad Robot will have explicit executive producers on Sid & Zoey: J.J. Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich will serve as executive producers for Bad Robot.
Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s contributions are fleshed out with Jason Blum, James Wan, and Rob Hackett as executive producers for the series.
Blumhouse Atomic Monster is the production studio behind Sid & Zoey, underscoring its central role in bringing the series to Netflix.
Kasdan and Shiban bring notable genre and YA-genre experience: Kasdan has Willow and Freaks and Geeks (as well as The First Time), while Shiban has OZARK and has directed episodes of NOS4A2 and Better Call Saul.
Sid & Zoey is positioned within Netflix’s broader YA hub initiative, which Netflix described as comprising several hundred titles in development or catalog.
Netflix has ordered Variety an eight-episode supernatural mystery series called Sid & Zoey, with heavy-hitting producers J.J. Abrams and horror studio Blumhouse Atomic Monster behind it. The show centers on two teens — a seductive New York outsider named Sid and a punk-rock local girl named Zoey — who uncover a dark, hidden world beneath a small Mississippi town.
Jon Kasdan and John Shiban will co-create, co-showrun, and write the series. The order is part of Netflix's push to build a dedicated YA hub, which the streamer says includes several hundred titles either in its catalog or in development, according to Dread Central.
Sid & Zoey is billed as a gothic romance with supernatural mystery elements. Sid is described as a "seductive, amoral" New York teen. Zoey is the local police chief's punk-rock daughter. Together they get pulled into a dangerous hidden world lurking beneath their seemingly quiet Mississippi town.
The two leads also wrestle with a forbidden and dangerous attraction to each other. Dread Central described the show as blending teen romance with dark, genre-driven horror elements — a mix that fits both producing studios perfectly.
The producer lineup is stacked. J.J. Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich will executive produce for Bad Robot. Jason Blum, James Wan, and Rob Hackett will executive produce for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. That means two of Hollywood's biggest genre brands are sharing the same series.
Blumhouse Atomic Monster — the joint venture between Blum's Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster — has built its name on horror franchises. Pairing that studio with Abrams' Bad Robot gives Sid & Zoey serious genre credibility from day one, according to Yahoo.
Jon Kasdan is no stranger to YA storytelling. He created the Willow series for Disney+ and worked on Freaks and Geeks, one of the most beloved teen shows ever made. He also wrote and directed the indie film The First Time.
Co-showrunner John Shiban brings a different kind of experience. He worked on Ozark and directed episodes of NOS4A2 and Better Call Saul. Together, Kasdan and Shiban cover both the emotional teen drama side and the dark, thriller-driven storytelling that Sid & Zoey will need.
Sid & Zoey is not a one-off. Netflix is building what it calls a YA hub — a dedicated home for coming-of-age stories across its platform. The streamer says the hub will span several hundred titles, mixing new originals with existing catalog titles.
Supernatural teen romance has proven reliable for Netflix. Shows like Wednesday and Outer Banks drew massive audiences. Sid & Zoey, with its gothic tone and A-list producers, is clearly meant to be a flagship entry in that growing slate, according to Variety.
