New York Knicks NBA Finals practice draws celebrity fans, uniting the city.

Rapper Fat Joe crashed coach Mike Brown's press conference Sunday, calling out from the back of the room to roast his sneakers and demand an autographed pair if the Knicks win the championship. AP reported the moment drew laughs — and summed up the electric mood surrounding New York's first NBA Finals appearance since 1999.
The practice day at Madison Square Garden drew a star-studded crowd: director Spike Lee, actors Tracy Morgan, Timothée Chalamet, and Ben Stiller all showed up courtside. Brown, meeting Stiller for the first time, told reporters, "I got my man Fat Joe sitting in the back. This is a great day for Mike Brown," according to AP.
Brown thought his press conference was over when Fat Joe stood up at the back of the room, according to Caledonian Record. The rapper zeroed in on Brown's sneakers, giving him a hard time in front of the whole room. Fat Joe then made his ask: an autographed pair if New York wins the title.
Brown took it all in stride. Stiller, who brought his own camera to document the practice session, also met the coach for the first time. Brown noted his wife had been "too shy" to ask Stiller for a photo after the Eastern Conference Finals clincher, per WFMZ.
Fat Joe went beyond sneaker talk. He told reporters the Knicks' Finals run has brought the city together in a way he hasn't seen in decades. "I've seen Hasidic Jews breakdancing with Black kids outside the stadium," he said, according to AP. He called it "the greatest unification... of this New York City since 9/11."
The Knicks last reached the Finals in 1999 — a 27-year drought. Their last championship came in 1973. The team swept the Cleveland Cavaliers 4–0 in the Eastern Conference Finals on May 25, then won Games 1 and 2 in San Antonio to take a 2–0 series lead, per Greenwich Time.
Game 3 is set for Monday at Madison Square Garden — the first Finals game at the arena in 27 years. The cheapest resale ticket was listed at $9,995, according to Durango Herald. Some courtside seats for a potential Game 5 have been listed as high as $58,000.
The city is fully locked in. New York City's mayor announced an executive order suspending kids' bedtimes for the duration of the Finals. The Knicks are also on a 13-game postseason winning streak — the second-longest in NBA history — heading into Game 3, per News10.
Brown was hired on July 7, 2025, replacing Tom Thibodeau, who had back-to-back 50-win seasons but never made it past the Eastern Conference Finals. Brown came in with a simple mandate: win a title, according to LMT Online.
Captain Jalen Brunson, who won Eastern Conference Finals MVP, kept his focus sharp even amid the celebrity circus. "I know the fan base is really excited," he said, per Erie News Now. "But as a team, we have more work to do."
