Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Apologizes Following Backlash Over Record Contract Remarks

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. apologized to fans and teammates Friday after backlash over Spanish-language interview remarks that his 14-year, $500 million contract rewarded past accomplishments rather than future performance. He said he regretted the comments, was disappointed in his season and would keep working to justify the contract. The apology came after Toronto was eliminated from playoff contention, following Guerrero’s major role in the Blue Jays’ World Series run last season. Former Blue Jays catcher and analyst Gregg Zaun criticized manager John Schneider for coddling Guerrero and argued he should hold the star accountable, including considering a lower spot in the batting order; Schneider defended his approach.
Guerrero said he had been losing sleep over his poor performance and had spoken with his Hall of Fame father about it; he also acknowledged an on-and-off back injury but said it was not an excuse for his struggles.
In 2026, Guerrero hit nine home runs and drove in 56 runs across 142 games, missing 17 contests because of injury, according to Sportsnet’s reporting cited by Moneywise.
Moneywise noted that, despite his offensive struggles, Guerrero had largely met expectations in other ways, including playing elite defence and supporting teammates without letting his slump affect them.
Guerrero signed his record-setting Toronto contract in 2025, before the Blue Jays reached the World Series; he then hit eight home runs in 18 postseason games, and his “born ready” remark before Game 7 of the ALCS became a rallying cry for the city.
