Massachusetts prepares for America250 anniversary with Fourth of July fireworks and year-long events
Massachusetts is going all-out for the Fourth of July 2026, marking 250 years of American independence with fireworks from the Berkshires to Cape Cod. The state's "MA250" initiative is coordinating dozens of events, including historical reenactments, festivals, and major fireworks displays across dozens of cities and towns, according to Wicked Local.
The celebrations stretch from late June through mid-July, with the centerpiece being the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4. Governor Maura Healey has called Massachusetts the "State of Firsts," saying the Commonwealth is "leading commemorations for the next two years," per Mass.gov.
Boston Leads With a Star-Studded July 4th Spectacular
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular kicks off at 7:00 PM on July 4 at the DCR Hatch Shell. Conductor Keith Lockhart will lead the orchestra in world premieres of two new works by American composers. Host Jane Lynch will emcee the night, with performances by Lainey Wilson, Chance the Rapper, and Trombone Shorty, according to Patriot Ledger.
Boston Harborfest gets things going even earlier. On July 2, a ceremonial cake cutting happens at Downtown Crossing at 12:00 PM. Fireworks launch from Long Wharf at 9:15 PM that same night. Then, from July 11 to 16, Sail Boston 2026 brings international tall ships to Boston Harbor, with a Parade of Sail on July 11 and more fireworks on July 11 and July 15.
Fireworks Light Up Towns From Cape Cod to the Berkshires
On July 3, early displays fire up in Andover at 9:00 PM, Fitchburg at 9:30 PM, and South Deerfield at 8:45 PM, according to Enterprise News. On July 4, Plymouth launches fireworks at 9:00 PM at DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park. Falmouth lights up Falmouth Heights Beach at the same time.
North Adams, Salem, and Marblehead all fire up at 9:15 PM on July 4. Salem's display is at the Maritime National Historic Site. Marblehead holds its Harbor Illumination the same night. Springfield caps the evening with its "Star Spangled Springfield" show at Riverfront Park at 9:30 PM, per The Gardner News.
Celebrations Start Early, With June Events Across the State
The festivities begin even before Independence Day. The Upton Fireworks Festival kicks things off on June 20. Mashpee High School hosts its own fireworks display on June 27, per Wicked Local. These early events are part of a statewide effort to spread the celebrations out and give more residents a chance to take part.
The Healey administration has put real money behind the effort. The state has handed out $3.5 million in MA250 grants — $1.5 million in the first round and $2 million in the second. A total of 59 organizations received funding. That includes $50,000 for a "Revolutionary Firsts Trail" in Central Massachusetts, according to Wicked Local.
History, Inclusion, and Politics Shape the 250th Narrative
The MA250 effort goes beyond fireworks. Planners want to include stories of Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ communities in the commemorations. The Mashpee Wampanoag and Aquinnah Wampanoag tribes are building a traditional 20-foot dugout canoe, called a mishoon, to launch in 2026, per Enterprise News.
The celebrations are not without political tension. A 2026 NBC News poll found only 33% of Americans call themselves "very patriotic" — a record low since 2000. Governor Healey has also clashed with the federal "Freedom 250" effort, calling a related federal fair "ridiculous." The MassGOP fired back, calling her stance an "embarrassment," according to Patriot Ledger.
