Calgary Flames' 2026-27 Season Promises Excitement, Blake Coleman's Emotional Return to Saddledome

The NHL has released its full 2026-27 season schedule, and for Calgary Flames fans, the timing carries extra weight. This will be the final season played at the Saddledome, making every home game a potential farewell moment, according to Calgary Herald.
The Flames are not expected to contend for the Stanley Cup this year. But National Post notes there are still several marquee games on the calendar that give fans plenty of reasons to show up.
Calgary kicks off the 2026-27 campaign at home against the Seattle Kraken. It is a strong opener for a team looking to build excitement heading into its last year at the Saddledome, according to Ottawa Citizen.
The Flames may not be playoff favourites, but a home opener gives the fanbase a charged atmosphere right away. The Saddledome crowd is expected to bring extra energy knowing this building's days are numbered, Calgary Herald reported.
One of the most anticipated nights of the season will be Blake Coleman's first game back in Calgary. Coleman was traded to Vegas in early July, making his return to the Saddledome a highly emotional moment, according to National Post.
Coleman was a fan favourite during his time with the Flames. Mitchell Advocate notes he is widely expected to receive a standing ovation from the Calgary crowd when he steps onto the ice wearing a different jersey.
The schedule also features visits from some of the NHL's biggest names. Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nazem Kadri are all set to play in Calgary this season, according to Pincher Creek Echo.
MacKinnon and Makar are widely regarded as the best player and best defenceman in the league right now. Their appearances at the Saddledome give fans a chance to watch elite hockey in a building that won't be hosting NHL games much longer, Brantford Expositor noted.
The first Battle of Alberta matchup is scheduled between March 3 and April 5. The rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers remains one of the most heated in Canadian hockey, according to Goderich Signal Star.
The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes are also on the schedule. Ottawa Citizen reports that a visit from the reigning champions will add another high-profile date to what is shaping up to be a memorable farewell season at the Saddledome.
