Five Azerbaijani Sailors Killed in Azov Sea Drone Strikes on Sanction-Linked Cargo Ships

Five Azerbaijani sailors were killed after two foreign-flagged cargo ships, Natra and Zirkon, were struck by drones in the Sea of Azov near Russia’s port of Taganrog, according to Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry and media reports. The ships were reportedly traveling from Turkey to Rostov-on-Don to load grain when Natra (sailing under Belize’s flag) and Zirkon (under Palau’s flag) caught fire and suffered damage; overall, 25 Azerbaijani nationals were aboard and three survivors were taken to a hospital in Yeysk. Azerbaijan said the vessels are not owned by the Azerbaijani state and that authorities are coordinating with relevant countries while seeking consular access and information about the circumstances. Russian officials attributed the strikes to Ukrainian drone attacks and said Russia is working with Azerbaijan on obtaining details and assistance for affected citizens, while also noting that fragments were being examined and investigations underway. Separate reporting highlighted the ships’ shifting flag histories consistent with Russia’s use of “flags of convenience” and a broader shadow-fleet pattern to conduct maritime trade amid sanctions.
