The film's casting includes Matt Dillon as Frank Stallone, AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack, P.J. Byrne as Irwin Winkler, Toby Kebbell as Robert Chartoff, Kiki Seto as Talia Shire, Jay Duplass as John G. Avildsen and Stephan James as Carl Weathers.

The project is written by Peter Gamble and directed by Peter Farrelly, who also serves as a producer (along with Christian Baha).
The original Rocky was produced for under $1 million, went on to be the biggest box-office hit of 1976 and won Best Picture at the Oscars.
Amazon MGM has released the first trailer for I Play Rocky, a biographical drama about how Sylvester Stallone fought to star in his own script — and won. Yahooreported the trailer debuted at CinemaCon in April before dropping publicly, with the film set for a November 6, 2026 theatrical release.
The movie stars Anthony Ippolito as a young Stallone, capturing the personal hardships — financial strain and health struggles — he endured while chasing the role that made him famous. Rocky went on to become the biggest box-office hit of 1976 and won Best Picture at the Oscars, all on a budget of under $1 million.
Ippolito leads a loaded cast in the film. Screen Crush reports that Matt Dillon plays Frank Stallone, AnnaSophia Robb plays Sasha Czack, and Stephan James takes on the role of Carl Weathers. Toby Kebbell plays producer Robert Chartoff, P.J. Byrne plays Irwin Winkler, Jay Duplass plays director John G. Avildsen, and Kiki Seto plays Talia Shire.
Peter Farrelly directs from a script by Peter Gamble. Farrelly also serves as a producer alongside Christian Baha. Comic Book describes the film as the story of a man who believed, against long odds, that Rocky Balboa was his role to play — and refused to walk away without it.
The film frames Stallone's story as more than ambition. Yahoo says the trailer highlights his financial hardship and health challenges during the years he spent writing the script and pushing studios to let him star in it. He was an unknown actor at the time — and studios wanted a bigger name.
Stallone reportedly held firm. He refused to sell his script unless he could play the lead. That gamble paid off. The original Rocky cost less than $1 million to make. According to Screen Crush, it became 1976's top-grossing film and won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Rocky did not stop at one film. The original story sparked six Rocky movies and three Creed films. A streaming spin-off is also in development, showing just how far one underdog story has traveled. Comic Book notes the franchise stands as one of Hollywood's most enduring examples of authentic, working-class storytelling.
I Play Rocky leans into that legacy. The film positions Stallone's origin story as the ultimate underdog tale — the man behind the underdog movie. According to SEENIT, the film will open in UK and Irish cinemas on the same date, November 6, making it a wide international theatrical release.
Amazon MGM chose CinemaCon in April to first show I Play Rocky to theater owners. Yahoo reported that the early reaction framed the film as a prestige drama with awards potential. A November release date puts it squarely in the window studios typically reserve for Oscar contenders.
Farrelly already has an Oscar on his shelf — he won Best Picture for Green Book in 2019. That track record, combined with the Stallone origin story and a November slot, signals Amazon MGM is betting big on this one landing well beyond just Rocky fans.
