Criterion Announces Comprehensive 4K Release of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein with Extended ‘Reborn Cut’ This October

The Frankenstein edition's cover art is created by Denver Balbaboco and uses a painting-inspired aesthetic that highlights the release's artful presentation.
The physical set includes two 4K UHD discs (the theatrical version and The Reborn Cut) and two Blu-rays carrying the films and extensive bonus features; The Reborn Cut runs 158 minutes and features a new audio commentary with Guillermo del Toro, plus the documentary The Anatomy Lesson and The Parlour conversations.
Pricing for the release is set at $59.95 for the 4K + Blu-ray set, $49.95 for the Blu-ray, and $29.95 for the DVD.
Extras include The Parlour conversations featuring Guillermo del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac and others, The Anatomy Lesson: Director’s Cut, English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, English descriptive audio, and an essay by Christopher Frayling.
Frankenstein previously premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and earned nine Academy Award nominations, with wins for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.
The Criterion Collection is giving Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein the full prestige treatment. Empire Online reports that Criterion will release a director-approved four-disc 4K Blu-ray set on October 27, featuring a brand-new extended director's cut called The Reborn Cut.
The Reborn Cut runs 158 minutes — noticeably longer than the theatrical version. Gizmodo called the release "jaw-dropping," pointing to its extensive bonus features and stunning cover art. The set is priced at $59.95 for the 4K + Blu-ray bundle.
The package includes two 4K UHD discs and two Blu-rays. The first 4K disc holds the theatrical cut of the film. The second carries The Reborn Cut. Both formats feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, according to JoBlo.
The Blu-rays hold the films plus all bonus features. Those extras include a new audio commentary with del Toro, a documentary called The Anatomy Lesson: Director's Cut, and The Parlour conversations. The Parlour features del Toro alongside cast members Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Oscar Isaac.
The film first premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. It went on to earn nine Academy Award nominations. CBR confirmed it won three Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.
Del Toro's version of Mary Shelley's classic story was produced by Netflix. Its awards run and festival buzz made it one of the most talked-about horror films in recent years. The Criterion release now gives it a permanent home for collectors.
The cover art comes from artist Denver Balbaboco. It uses a painting-inspired style that fits Criterion's signature look. An essay by film historian Christopher Frayling is also included in the set, per NewsBreak.
Buyers have three price points to choose from. The 4K + Blu-ray set costs $59.95. The Blu-ray-only edition is $49.95. A DVD version is available for $29.95. All editions include English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, plus English descriptive audio.
Frankenstein is not the only big Criterion drop this fall. The Collection also announced a 4K release of The Silence of the Lambs. That title arrives one week earlier, on October 20, also as a boxed set with rich bonus features, JoBlo reported.
October is shaping up as a major month for horror fans and physical media collectors alike. Both titles arrive just before Halloween, giving Criterion two high-profile releases in the same window.
