Phoebe Bridgers Makes Tonight Show History with Surprise Performance and Nine-Piece Children's Band

The Tonight Show performance featured a nine-piece band made up entirely of children (ages eight to 14), with the onstage lineup filling in for the recorded version's collaborators: Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus on backing vocals, Caroline Shaw also on vocals, and instrumental roles filled by Alex G (drums/voice memo), Jack Antonoff (electric guitar, synths, drums, vocoder), Nate Walcott (trumpet), Chris Thile (mandolin), and Christian Lee Hutson (acoustic guitar).
The host teased the appearance as a surprise and emphasized that, in his 17 years hosting, he had never previously welcomed a surprise musical guest, underscoring the novelty of Bridgers’ moment on The Tonight Show. This marked the show’s first-ever unannounced guest.
The music video for Lost Boys features Bridgers in a Renaissance-faire setting, with Skyler Gisondo appearing as a gas station cashier, highlighting the cinematic visual approach tied to the single’s release.
The Lost Weekend tour details include a September kickoff in Indianapolis, Indiana, followed by a UK run in November with support from Isaac Wood and Anaïs; the tour is described as phoneless (device-free), with tour imagery shot by Gregory Crewdson.
Phoebe Bridgers crashed The Tonight Show on Tuesday as its first-ever unannounced musical guest, performing the television debut of her new song "Lost Boys" Pitchfork. Host Jimmy Fallon noted that in 17 years on the job, he had never once welcomed a surprise musical act — making Bridgers' appearance a genuine first for the show Stereogum.
The performance had a twist: her entire backing band was made up of children ages eight to 14. The nine kids replaced a star-studded lineup from the recorded version, which features Jack Antonoff, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Chris Thile, among others Under the Radar.
Bridgers walked out with nine young musicians who filled every role from drums to guitar. On the recorded track, those parts belong to heavy hitters: Antonoff on electric guitar and synths, Alex G on drums, Nate Walcott on trumpet, and Christian Lee Hutson on acoustic guitar Pitchfork. The children pulled off the whole set live.
"Lost Boys" is the lead single from her upcoming album Lost Weekend, out August 14 Consequence. Bridgers co-produced the song alongside Antonoff, Tony Berg, Ethan Gruska, and Alex G. Backing vocals on the recording come from boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, plus composer Caroline Shaw Under the Radar.
Lost Weekend will be Bridgers' first solo record since Punisher, which came out in 2020. The only other solo release in between was the 2022 single "Sidelines" Stereogum. The new album arrives after years of work with her supergroup boygenius, making the return a major moment for her solo career.
The music video for "Lost Boys" leans into cinematic visuals. It places Bridgers in a Renaissance-faire setting, with actor Skyler Gisondo appearing as a gas station cashier Our Culture. The clip signals that the album will carry a strong visual identity alongside its music.
Bridgers will hit the road in September to support the album. The Lost Weekend tour spans 45 dates and kicks off in Indianapolis, Indiana Consequence. A UK leg follows in November, with support from Isaac Wood and Anaïs. Tour photography was shot by acclaimed photographer Gregory Crewdson.
Every show on the tour will be device-free — no phones allowed. Bridgers has already tested that format at recent pop-up concerts, including a high-profile show at Madison Square Garden Stereogum. She has been building buzz steadily ahead of the August 14 release date with these surprise appearances.
