Goalkeeper Marco Carducci receives warm Calgary welcome and secures win in emotional return
Marco Carducci returned to Calgary on June 6, 2026, for the first time since leaving Cavalry FC — and the crowd gave him a warm welcome before beating his new team 2-0. In 2022, Carducci was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He had surgery within 48 hours and returned to the pitch just weeks later. That fight deepened his bond with Calgary fans. His fundraiser — "Marco's Meatball Pizza" at the Italian Centre Shop — made him a local folk hero, Calgary Herald reported.
Carducci Signed With Halifax After Seeking a New Challenge
Carducci left Cavalry in September 2025, saying he wanted a "new challenge." His final game in Calgary was a 2-1 loss in the CPL Championship, played in blizzard conditions. HFX Wanderers FC signed him on December 22, 2025, to a two-year deal through 2027, according to Edmonton Examiner.
Halifax coach Vanni Sartini — formerly of the Vancouver Whitecaps — recruited Carducci as part of a push to turn the East Coast club into a title contender. Bringing in a goalkeeper with Carducci's experience was seen as a statement move for a young squad.
Cavalry Fans Turned the Love Into Competitive Edge
The Cavalry supporters group, the Foot Soldiers, balanced personal affection with competitive fire. They cheered Carducci before kickoff — then used "mind games" and jeers once the whistle blew. Carducci took it in stride. "All fair... I would have expected no less," he said, per Calgary Herald.
Carducci made three saves and posted a 60% save rate on the night. His replacement, Nathan Ingham, had little to do but was sharp — recording one save and his fourth clean sheet in eight matches with Cavalry, according to Pincher Creek Echo.
The Loss Exposes Halifax's Persistent Road Struggles
Halifax has now lost heavily in Calgary again. The Wanderers have only three wins in 26 all-time matches against Cavalry, and have been outscored 19-6 in their 10 visits to ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows, according to The Crag and Canyon.
The result shows that signing a top goalkeeper alone is not enough. Halifax struggled to create chances — just one corner kick in the entire match. The Sartini era still needs more offensive firepower to support what Carducci brings between the posts.
