Coinbase Ventures Buys ENA Token, Expands Ethena Partnership to Serve 100 Million Users

Coinbase Ventures disclosed its first Ethena investment by buying Ethena’s ENA token on the open market, alongside a separate Coinbase–Ethena partnership to expand onchain finance and savings for Coinbase’s 100 million-plus users. Ethena says Coinbase will become its primary custodian, wallet provider, and perpetuals venue, with Ethena’s USDe and related products expected to roll out across Coinbase’s ecosystem, including Base, beginning with a first growth initiative next week. The partnership also calls for USDC to be integrated into future product phases, as Coinbase positions itself to support dollar-denominated crypto savings and related yield offerings. Ethena founder Guy Young said the integration will be the first time Ethena products reach Coinbase’s broad user base and argued that evolving U.S. “Clarity Act” developments could further benefit onchain stablecoin-style products, particularly around idle balances on exchanges. Coverage also emphasized the significance of the open-market ENA purchase versus a private discounted round, suggesting closer alignment with ENA holders rather than a venture cap-table structure. The news drove ENA price gains in the hours following the announcements.
Ethena said Coinbase Prime was selected in 2024 to provide custody, USDC services, and “self custodial wallet services” for the protocol—described as a deeper relationship that preceded the broader Coinbase–Ethena rollout.
Coinbase stated the partnership would support “security and operations across more than $5 billion in assets,” positioning Coinbase as Ethena’s operational backbone as USDe expands across Coinbase’s ecosystem (including Base).
Ethena’s product mechanics were further detailed: USDe is a synthetic dollar protocol that uses hedging strategies to maintain dollar exposure through crypto asset positions, while sUSDe provides variable yield “based on protocol revenue sources” and remains tied to the hedging model and market conditions.
Coinbase Ventures’ investment context: The Defiant reported the ENA buy is the venture arm’s first such disclosed open-market token purchase and noted that Coinbase Ventures has logged “over 600 investments,” “almost all” of which have been seed or early-stage private rounds—contrasting with the public-market ENA alignment with token holders.
