Poland's Baltic Power offshore wind farm delivers first electricity, marking energy milestone

Baltic Power secured a 25-year Contract for Difference (CfD) with Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office in 2021, providing revenue support for the project.
The 1.1 GW Baltic Power project spans about 130 square kilometres of the Baltic Sea, located roughly 23 kilometres off the coast near Choczewo and Leba.
Estimated project cost was about EUR 4.73 billion in 2023.
Northland Power’s offshore wind capacity would rise from about 1.2 GW to 2.3 GW with Baltic Power, and the developer plans grid-scale storage projects totaling 300 MW / 1.2 GWh.
Poland has crossed into a new energy era. The Baltic Power offshore wind farm — the country's first — has begun feeding electricity into the national grid, according to Reuters. The 1.1 GW project, built 23 kilometres off the coast near Choczewo and Łeba, is expected to produce around 4 TWh of power each year, enough to run about 1.5 million Polish homes.
The farm is a joint venture between Canadian energy company Northland Power, which holds a 49% stake, and Polish oil and gas giant ORLEN, which owns the majority 51%. Renews confirmed that 54 of the project's 76 Vestas 15 MW turbines have now been installed, with full commercial operation targeted for the second half of 2026.
Construction is still underway, but power is already flowing. According to Renews, 54 of the 76 planned turbines are in place and commissioning has begun. Each turbine is a Vestas 15 MW unit — among the most powerful offshore turbines available. The wind farm covers about 130 square kilometres of the Baltic Sea.
