Nine Injured in Kansas City Shooting Near England's Future World Cup Training Site

Nine people were injured in a Saturday morning shooting near England’s World Cup base camp in Kansas City, Missouri, with Kansas City police reporting the victims’ injuries were not life-threatening and that no suspects were in custody as the investigation continued. The incident occurred roughly four miles from the Swope Soccer Village, where England are scheduled to train, and England had not yet arrived in Kansas City at the time. In a separate shooting later that same day, two men were killed in Kansas City, underscoring broader weekend violence in the host city. England’s preparations were taking place in Florida as the team played friendlies ahead of the tournament, with matches scheduled before and around its move to Kansas City. The reports also highlighted continuing concern about gun violence in the United States, citing Gun Violence Archive figures on mass shootings in 2025.
Kansas City Police Chief Jake Pecchina said officers responded after hearing gunshots and, when they arrived, found “a large crowd that had dispersed,” with initial reports leading to multiple hospitalizations; police said later that nine adults had been taken to different hospitals and they were continuing patrols at the site.
A separate report quoted Kansas City Police Department leadership describing an immediate stampede-like scene after the captain “rushed to the spot,” with “three women injured in the incident…immediately taken to the hospital,” before the injury count ultimately reached nine.
Reuters reported that the Football Association (FA) declined to comment on the shooting.
The first shooting’s location was specified as near “79th Street and Troost Avenue,” while the later incident that killed two men occurred on “Westport Road,” tying the weekend violence to particular corridors of the city.
Beyond the immediate safety concern, one report noted Kansas City will host “six matches” at the tournament, including a quarter-final (with Argentina playing in the city), meaning the shootings occurred days before a broader slate of high-profile games.
