Hao-Yu Lee's Ninth-Inning Double Powers Tigers to 2-1 Victory Over Angels

The Detroit Tigers opened their road trip with a gritty 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Angels Stadium, according to Fresno Bee. The Tigers trailed for most of the night before a late rally sealed the victory.
Hao-Yu Lee delivered the decisive blow — a two-out, two-run, opposite-field double in the ninth inning. That single swing turned a losing night into a winning one, Charlotte Observer reported.
Angels lefty Reid Detmers was dominant early. He held the Tigers scoreless for six full innings, keeping Detroit's offense quiet and off-balance, according to Star-Telegram.
The Angels also struggled at the plate, but in a different way. Los Angeles missed 18 of their 42 swings and took 18 called strikes, per Island Packet. That's a combined 36 unproductive at-bats — a sign of shaky offense on both sides.
With two outs in the ninth and the Tigers still trailing, Hao-Yu Lee stepped up and delivered. His opposite-field double drove in two runs and gave Detroit a 2-1 lead it would not give back, Sun Herald reported.
The hit was a classic clutch moment. Two outs, late in a tight game, against a tough bullpen — and Lee came through with a clean, decisive swing to the opposite side of the field.
Detroit's pitching staff also played a huge role. Starter Troy Melton gave way to Keider Montero in relief. Montero was sharp from the start, retiring seven straight batters at one point, per Bellingham Herald.
Montero closed out the game with a 3.1-inning save — an unusually long outing for a relief pitcher. He kept the Angels off the board and secured the win for Detroit, according to Bradenton.com.
The win gives Detroit real momentum. Road trips are tough, and getting the first game is a key mental boost for any team. The Tigers showed they could grind out a win even when the hits weren't coming early, Mod Bee reported.
For the Angels, the loss stings. Their batters left too many opportunities on the table. Thirty-six missed or called strikes in a one-run game is a recipe for defeat, and it cost them on their home field, according to Tri-City Herald.
