Arizona Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo May Return Despite Missing Playoffs

As the 2026 season neared its end, the Arizona Diamondbacks remained in contention for a postseason berth despite needing favorable results and a strong finish. Manager Torey Lovullo said the team’s ability to focus on what it can control reminded him of Arizona’s 2023 World Series club; the Diamondbacks had won five straight, including a sweep of Colorado. Team president and CEO Derrick Hall praised Lovullo’s work through injuries and roster upheaval, signaling that his future may not hinge solely on making the playoffs. Lovullo is on a one-year contract, and the team had yet to announce whether he would be retained beyond 2026.
Arizona’s playoff path was especially narrow: it needed Philadelphia to lose at least two games to Tampa Bay, while also finishing the season strongly.
Before the Colorado sweep, the Diamondbacks had won two comeback games against the Yankees; the sweep at Coors Field was their first there since 2018.
Lovullo’s tenure in Arizona had produced a 749-768 record and two playoff appearances in 10 seasons, though his teams had posted winning records in six of those seasons.
