Roche Unveils AXELIOS 1, a Disruptive Sequencing Platform Challenging Illumina's Market Lead

Roche has launched AXELIOS 1, a next-generation gene sequencer built to challenge Illumina's grip on a $7.3 billion global market. The Swiss diagnostics giant began shipping the system to research labs in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France on June 29, 2026, according to Reuters.
Priced at $750,000 in the U.S., AXELIOS 1 undercuts Illumina's flagship NovaSeq X, which lists between $985,000 and $1.25 million. Roche wants to place 100 units in its first year and says the platform could eventually generate more than 1 billion Swiss francs — roughly $1.12 billion — in annual revenue, Reuters reported.
AXELIOS 1 runs on a chemistry called Sequencing By Expansion, or SBX. Roche built the technology through two deals: a 2014 purchase of Genia Technologies and a 2020 acquisition of Stratos Genomics, according to EE News Europe. SBX works by stretching a DNA molecule into a surrogate polymer — called an Xpandomer — that is 50 times longer than the original. That makes the genetic signal far easier to read cleanly.
The system can sequence 16 human genomes in four hours, or up to 64 genomes in a 20-hour window without any human involvement, Yahoo Tech reported. In October 2025, a pilot with Broad Clinical Labs and Boston Children's Hospital set a Guinness World Record by sequencing and analyzing a full human genome in 3 hours and 59 minutes.
Roche isn't just selling a machine. The AXELIOS 1 launch comes with a suite of partnerships and tools designed to make adoption easier. Google's DeepVariant team worked with Roche to tune its variant-calling software for SBX signals. Roche also launched XOOS, an open-source bioinformatics tool suite on GitHub, a move that breaks from the traditionally closed-off software models of older sequencing companies, according to Yahoo Tech.
Validation work came from two respected institutions. Hartwig Medical Foundation confirmed the system's accuracy on cancer whole-genome sequencing. Broad Clinical Labs praised its amplification-free workflow. Early users at Centogene found it could work with just 75 nanograms of DNA — small enough to sequence from a dried blood spot — a breakthrough for rare disease research, EE News Europe reported.
Roche faces a steep climb. Illumina controls roughly 70% of the global NGS system market, according to Reuters. Its installed base is vast, lab staff are already trained on its systems, and its data pipelines are deeply embedded in research workflows. Matt Sause, CEO of Roche Diagnostics, called AXELIOS 1 a "disruptive sequencing solution" with the speed and cost profile to enable applications "previously not feasible."
Analyst Stefan Schneider of Vontobel told Reuters the 100-unit target is "achievable with high certainty" given Roche's commercial scale. But he cautioned that diagnostic hardware sales often move slowly because of complex institutional purchasing processes. Computational biologist Keith Robison also flagged a key unknown: reagent pricing. The real cost battle, he argued, will play out in what labs pay per gigabase of data — not the sticker price of the machine.
AXELIOS 1 is currently cleared for research use only. But Roche's long-term goal is to bring the platform into clinical diagnostics. If that happens, hospitals could one day sequence a critically ill patient's full genome in hours — not weeks — shrinking wait times for life-saving genetic diagnoses, according to EE News Europe.
The broader NGS market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate between 15.8% and 21.9% through 2035, according to Yahoo Finance. Roche is also bundling AXELIOS 1 with its existing KAPA library prep products and AVENIO oncology assays, giving it an end-to-end pitch that competitors like Ultima Genomics and Element Biosciences cannot yet match.
