Netflix Documentary Trailer Reveals Matthew Perry Spent Millions on Sobriety Efforts

Netflix has released a trailer for *The One About Matthew Perry*, a three-part documentary about the *Friends* star’s life, career and struggles with addiction. Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, says he spent about $7 million trying to get sober; reports also say he went to rehab 15 times and attended roughly 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Featuring testimony from family and friends alongside archival footage, the series portrays Perry’s humor and success alongside the loneliness and addiction he described, as well as his efforts to support others in recovery. Directed by Mary Robertson, the documentary is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 27, 2026.
The articles specify that Perry struggled with alcohol, prescription opioids including Vicodin and OxyContin, and later ketamine.
In archival interview audio, Perry reflected that becoming famous did not resolve his inner struggles: “This didn't fix what's inside me.”
The trailer suggests acting itself offered Perry some comfort: his sister says, “When he made people laugh, it made him feel good.”
The coverage reports that Perry died after a cardiac event, with ketamine use cited as a contributing factor; it also says his personal assistant was sentenced to 41 months in prison in connection with his death.
