Luke Ronchi Departs Black Caps After Successful Era to Lead Melbourne Renegades in BBL

Ronchi helped lead New Zealand during a highly successful period, including the 2021 World Test Championship title, two ICC Men's T20 World Cup finals (2021 and 2026), and the 2025 Champions Trophy final.
He was part of New Zealand's achievements across formats, overseeing a 3-0 Test series win in India in 2024 and ODI series wins in India in 2024 and 2026, as well as the recent England Test series victory.
Ronchi will remain with the Black Caps through the India series before taking up the Melbourne Renegades post-series duties, with New Zealand Cricket to appoint his replacement in due course.
He is noted as the only player to have represented both Australia and New Zealand at the international level.
Renegades’ high-performance manager Clint McKay described Ronchi as an outstanding candidate with a clear vision and the ability to empower players and build strong relationships.
Luke Ronchi is leaving his role as New Zealand's batting coach to become head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. He will stay with the Black Caps through the upcoming home India series before taking up his new post, Perth Now reported.
Ronchi has been New Zealand's batting coach since 2020. During that time, the Black Caps won the 2021 World Test Championship, reached two ICC T20 World Cup finals, and won a historic 3-0 Test series in India in 2024. His departure marks the end of one of New Zealand cricket's most successful eras.
Ronchi's coaching record with New Zealand is hard to match. The team won the 2021 World Test Championship title and reached the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final in both 2021 and 2026. They also reached the 2025 Champions Trophy final. On top of that, they beat India 3-0 in a Test series on Indian soil in 2024 — a rare feat for any touring side.
Captain Tom Latham publicly praised Ronchi's impact. Latham credited him with building the team's batting culture and pushing players to grow. "He's worked incredibly hard," Latham said, adding that his departure would leave a real gap in the group. New Zealand Cricket will now search for his replacement.
Ronchi said he is grateful for his five years with New Zealand. His goal, he said, was always to help the team perform at the highest level. He pointed to several moments he is proud of, including the away series wins in India and England. He leaves feeling the team is in a strong place.
Ronchi is also notable for a unique place in cricket history. He is the only player ever to have represented both Australia and New Zealand at the international level. That cross-Tasman background may well help him connect with players from both countries as he steps into his new BBL role.
The Melbourne Renegades have struggled in recent BBL seasons and are looking for a reset. Renegades high-performance manager Clint McKay said Ronchi stood out from the moment they spoke. McKay described him as "an outstanding candidate" with a "clear vision" and a strong ability to empower players and build relationships.
Ronchi said he wants to build a dynamic and enjoyable environment for players at the Renegades. He also currently coaches Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League, which shows his growing profile as a global coaching figure. The Renegades are hoping his energy and experience can lift them back into title contention in BBL|16.
Ronchi's departure is part of a broader shake-up in Melbourne cricket coaching. Cameron White, who previously coached the Melbourne Renegades, has been named the new head coach of the Melbourne Stars. Both appointments were confirmed at the same time, NVI reported, effectively swapping coaching talent between the two rival Melbourne clubs.
