Ryan Coogler's Proximity Media Secures Multi-Year Netflix Deal for New TV Series Development

In a joint statement announcing the Netflix partnership, Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian said Proximity’s goal is “to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects,” and they praised Netflix for its “commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling,” adding they’re “thrilled to partner with Netflix” and named “Bela, Jinny, Nne and the entire Netflix team” as collaborators.
Netflix scripted-series chief Jinny Howe said Proximity’s founders have “cultivated an award-winning television division that continues to push the boundaries of storytelling,” and she added Netflix is “excited to welcome the entire Proximity team to Netflix,” with both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter noting the partnership will be developed “alongside Nne Ebong and our studio team.”
The Hollywood Reporter adds operational detail on the transition: Proximity Media Television VP of television Simone Harris is “currently overseeing the production of pilots” for the Hulu “The X-Files” reboot (starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel) and the live-action “Southern Bastards” adaptation (starring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman, and Tim McGraw).
Collider contextualizes Coogler’s recent track record by highlighting his long-running creative partnership with Michael B. Jordan (from Fruitvale Station through Creed and the Black Panther films), noting that their 2025 project “Sinners” “shattered records on its way to becoming one of the biggest movies of 2025.”
Ryan Coogler's Proximity Media has signed an exclusive, multi-year television deal with Netflix, the companies announced on June 18, 2026. The move ends Proximity's five-year run at Disney, where its TV pact expired on June 1, and plants the company at the center of Netflix's push for prestige, event-driven content Netflix Tudum.
The deal arrives at a peak moment for Coogler. His film *Sinners* grossed between $365 million and $370 million worldwide on a $90–$100 million budget and swept the 98th Academy Awards in March 2026, winning four Oscars — including Best Original Screenplay, Coogler's first The Oaklandside. Netflix stock rose nearly 1% on the announcement TradingView.
Proximity Media signed its first exclusive TV deal with Disney in February 2021. Over five years, the company became a key creative partner for Disney+ and Marvel, producing *Ironheart* and the animated *Eyes of Wakanda*. It also delivered *Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time* for National Geographic — the most-watched National Geographic series ever on Disney's streaming platform TheWrap.
Industry observers described Disney's loss and Netflix's gain as part of a broader creator shuffle. Disney recently re-signed Ryan Murphy from Netflix in a separate deal. Blex Media called it a "trading of Ryans" — with each streamer betting on a different type of prestige creator to anchor its scripted slate.
In a joint statement, Coogler, co-founder Zinzi Coogler, and partner Sev Ohanian said Proximity's goal is "to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects." They praised Netflix's "commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling" and said they are "thrilled to partner with Netflix" Netflix Tudum.
Netflix scripted-series chief Jinny Howe said Proximity has "cultivated an award-winning television division that continues to push the boundaries of storytelling." She added that development will move forward alongside Netflix executive Nne Ebong and Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria Netflix Tudum. At the Banff World Media Festival, Howe said the deal fits Netflix's goal to "take greater control over its own destiny" by building projects in-house.
Not everything transitions cleanly to Netflix. Proximity's VP of Television, Simone Harris, is still overseeing two pilots tied to the old Disney deal TheWrap. One is Hulu's reboot of *The X-Files*, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as FBI agents. The other is a live-action adaptation of *Southern Bastards*, with Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman, and Tim McGraw — casting finalized in April 2026 Variety.
However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Coogler's own involvement in those projects may be limited beyond the pilot stage. The exclusivity of the new Netflix deal could restrict how deeply he engages if either show is ordered to a full series. Disney and Hulu have stayed quiet on the matter, with trade outlets describing the split as a "natural inflection point" rather than a hostile break.
Netflix's pitch to Proximity goes beyond a single show. The platform wants a steady pipeline of series that become cultural events — content that drives headlines at launch, earns awards attention, and pulls in new subscribers. *Sinners* showed Coogler can deliver that. The film earned 16 Oscar nominations — an all-time record — and carried a 97% average on Rotten Tomatoes Wikipedia.
Collider noted that Coogler has long applied what analysts call the "Creed formula" — taking a known brand or story and modernizing it around a diverse, character-driven narrative. That approach fits what Netflix needs: not franchise sequels, but original stories big enough to feel like events. The deal gives Netflix a creator who can work across genres, from vampire horror to historical documentary, without being locked to a single cinematic universe.
