OpenAI Overhauls ChatGPT, Shifting to AI Agents, Coding, and Enterprise Tools

OpenAI is preparing a major redesign of ChatGPT, aiming to turn the chatbot into a “super app” centered on autonomous AI agents, stronger coding tools via Codex, and enterprise-oriented workflows, according to reports ahead of an expected IPO. The strategy is partly driven by the company’s need for more reliable revenue and a clearer path to profitability amid intensifying competition from rivals such as Anthropic and Microsoft. OpenAI is also reshaping ChatGPT’s web and mobile experiences to emphasize coding, image generation, and partner integrations, while reorganizing teams and prioritizing corporate customers over some consumer efforts. The pivot comes as ChatGPT reportedly surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, highlighting that the massive user base may serve as distribution while monetization increasingly shifts to agents, coding, and enterprise products. OpenAI’s plans also include strengthening ties with policymakers, including early access to certain AI models for the U.S. government under a voluntary framework associated with President Donald Trump. Commentary around the shift suggests that the chat interface may function more as a gateway than the core product.
OpenAI says its Codex coding platform has already attracted “more than five million weekly active users,” supporting the company’s push to monetize through coding and agentic work rather than the chat interface alone (with additional reporting noting these Codex users are mostly paying).
A senior OpenAI employee is quoted saying, “Chat is dead,” underscoring how internal messaging frames the ChatGPT redesign as a shift away from chat being the product.
The reporting places ChatGPT’s 1 billion monthly active users in historical context: it took Google Search 10 years, Facebook 8 years, and Instagram 6 years to reach similar scale—while ChatGPT did it in under 4 years.
OpenAI executive Thibault Sottiaux described the long-term goal as building a “personal AI agent” that can assist users across “all aspects of their lives,” from “workplace productivity to everyday activities,” not just conversational assistance.
To execute the pivot, OpenAI is reorganizing internally by consolidating product groups “under new leadership,” alongside prioritizing enterprise customers over some consumer-focused efforts.
