Octopath Traveler I & II Arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, Delivering Native 60fps

The Octopath Traveler Switch-2 release was revealed during the series’ eighth anniversary livestream, and both games went live on Switch 2 on the same day.
Octopath Traveler II introduces Latent Powers and a dynamic day-and-night system, expanding its interconnected storytelling and combat on Switch 2.
UK pre-orders are available on the Nintendo eShop with bundle pricing around £59.99 and standalone Octopath Traveler II at £49.99; US pricing is expected to be similar according to coverage.
The Switch 2 versions are launching as digital downloads (no physical release announced).
In Japan, the games are available digitally today, with the Western release dated for October 1 and a US price expectation around similar levels to the UK listing.
Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1, 2026 in the West. Square Enix confirmed the news during an eighth anniversary livestream for the series, and both games went live digitally in Japan the same day as the announcement.
The two HD-2D RPGs join Octopath Traveler 0 on the platform. Together, the Octopath series has sold over seven million copies, according to Pocket Tactics. The Switch 2 versions are built as native releases — not backwards-compatible ports — and are expected to run at a smooth 60fps.
Square Enix officially confirmed the October 1, 2026 release date for Western markets. Japan got digital access on the same day as the announcement. No physical release has been announced for either region. The games are available to pre-order now on the Nintendo eShop.
VGChartz reported that developer Acquire worked alongside Square Enix on the Switch 2 versions. The series celebrates its eighth anniversary with this rollout, timed alongside the new entry Octopath Traveler 0.
In the UK, a bundle of both games is priced at around £59.99. Octopath Traveler II on its own costs £49.99. Pocket Tactics noted that US pricing is expected to land at similar levels, though exact dollar figures have not been officially confirmed.
There is one catch that has frustrated some fans. Square Enix has not announced any upgrade path from the original Switch versions to the Switch 2 editions. Save data transfer between the two platforms has also not been addressed. Players who own the games on Switch 1 may need to buy again at full price.
Octopath Traveler II brings two major features the first game did not have. It adds Latent Powers, which are special abilities unique to each of its eight playable characters. It also includes a full day-and-night cycle that changes how characters interact with the world and how combat plays out.
Both games use Square Enix's HD-2D art style. The look blends retro pixel art with modern 3D lighting and effects. IGN highlighted the Switch 2 release date trailer, which showed the games running with sharper visuals and fluid performance compared to the original Switch versions.
The original Octopath Traveler launched as a Nintendo Switch exclusive back in 2018. It later came to other platforms, but the series has always been closely tied to Nintendo hardware. Bringing both games to Switch 2 as native launches — not simple ports — reinforces that relationship.
VGChartz noted the series has now grown to include three mainline entries, all arriving on Switch 2. With over seven million total copies sold, the franchise is one of Square Enix's stronger mid-tier RPG brands. The October 1 launch gives the Switch 2 library another major JRPG ahead of the holiday season.
