Calgary Philharmonic Names Ilan Mendel Resident Conductor While Music Director Search Continues

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has named Ilan Kumaranayake Mendel as its next resident conductor, starting with the 2026-27 season, according to Calgary Herald. The announcement comes while the orchestra continues its search for a permanent music director to replace Rune Bergmann, who departed in 2025.
Mendel will make his public debut with the orchestra on Sept. 9 at a free concert, Calgary Sun reported. The appointment gives the CPO a steady hand on the podium while the bigger music director search plays out.
Mendel brings a strong musical foundation to the role. He holds a diploma in trombone from The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music, according to Calgary Herald. He also earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto.
Starting as a trombonist before moving to the podium is an unusual path. It gives Mendel a deep, hands-on understanding of orchestral playing from the inside — something many conductors who train purely as conductors may lack, The Recorder noted.
The CPO has been without a music director since Rune Bergmann stepped down in 2025. Bergmann had led the orchestra for several years and built a strong profile for the ensemble. His exit left one of Canada's major orchestras in a period of transition, Calgary Herald reported.
The resident conductor role is designed to fill that gap in the short term. Mendel will lead concerts and keep the orchestra active and stable while the search for a long-term music director continues, according to Calgary Sun.
Music fans in Calgary will get their first chance to see Mendel lead the orchestra on Sept. 9. The concert is free, lowering the barrier for audiences who want to meet their new conductor without buying a ticket, The Whig reported.
Free debut concerts are a smart way for orchestras to build buzz around a new face. A strong first impression from Mendel could help the CPO maintain audience interest while the more high-profile music director search runs its course.
The CPO has not named a timeline for when it expects to land a new music director. Major orchestra searches often take one to three years. Guest conductors typically rotate through the podium during that time so the orchestra and audiences can evaluate candidates, according to The Observer.
Adding Mendel as resident conductor gives the CPO more flexibility. He can handle regular season concerts, freeing guest conductors to focus on high-stakes appearances that double as auditions for the top job, Stratford Beacon Herald noted.
