Atlanta Braves Recall Left-Handed Pitcher Ray Kerr, Designate Danny Young for Assignment

The Atlanta Braves have recalled left-handed pitcher Ray Kerr from the minors and designated fellow lefty Danny Young for assignment, according to AP. The move brings Kerr back to the big leagues after a full year away from the mound.
Kerr last pitched for Atlanta in 2024. He then underwent Tommy John surgery — a procedure to repair a torn elbow ligament — and missed all of the 2025 season while recovering, Newsday reported.
Tommy John surgery typically requires 12 to 18 months of recovery. Kerr went through that full process and is now healthy enough to rejoin Atlanta's active roster. His return gives the Braves a left-handed option in their bullpen, which is a key role for matching up against opposing left-handed hitters late in games, according to Winnipeg Free Press.
Kerr's recall shows the Braves believe he is ready to contribute at the major league level again. Teams rarely bring back pitchers this soon after Tommy John surgery unless they are confident in the arm's health and performance in minor league outings, Post Register noted.
To make room for Kerr, Atlanta designated Danny Young for assignment. A DFA means a team has 10 days to trade, release, or send a player to the minors. Young, also a left-handed pitcher, had been part of the Braves' bullpen depth, according to Yahoo Sports.
The move signals that Atlanta sees Kerr as the more valuable option right now. Young could clear waivers and accept a minor league assignment, keeping him in the organization. If another team claims him, he would move on, The Messenger reported.
Left-handed relievers are a premium in MLB. Managers use them specifically to get out tough left-handed batters in high-stakes moments. By recalling Kerr, Atlanta adds a proven arm who has already shown he can handle big-league hitters, according to Idaho Press.
The Braves have faced bullpen questions throughout recent seasons. Adding Kerr back into the mix gives manager Brian Snitker another tool. His return is one of the more notable roster moves Atlanta has made this season, HNG News reported.
