Investigation Underway After Three Die in Ohio Motel Fire

Three people died early Wednesday when a fire tore through an Econo Lodge motel in Wooster, Ohio, trapping them inside their room. The blaze was reported at around 1:30 a.m. ET, and when firefighters arrived, flames were already visible coming through the roof, according to Action News JAX.
The victims were identified as Hiteshkumar Suthar, Hinaben Suthara, and Isha Suthan. The motel has been closed, and other guests were relocated to nearby hotels, WHIO reported.
The fire broke out in the early morning hours, when most guests were asleep. Firefighters found the situation already severe when they pulled up. Flames were pushing through the roof of the motel, WPXI reported. The three victims were trapped inside a single motel room and could not get out in time.
The exact sequence of events that led to the deaths is still unclear. It is not yet known whether the victims tried to escape or were overcome before they could. Investigators have not said whether working smoke detectors were present in the room.
Officials identified the three people who died as Hiteshkumar Suthar, Hinaben Suthara, and Isha Suthan. Their relationship to one another has not been confirmed by authorities. No other injuries among motel guests or staff have been reported, according to WSOC TV.
The motel was occupied at the time of the fire. Other guests were safely evacuated and moved to other hotels in the area. It is unclear how many guests were staying at the property that night.
The cause of the fire is under active investigation. Three agencies are involved: the Wooster Township Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and the State Fire Marshal's Office, WSBTV reported. No cause has been announced, and no criminal charges have been filed.
Investigators have not said how long the probe is expected to take. Fires in motels can be difficult to trace, especially when the point of origin is heavily damaged. The State Fire Marshal's Office typically handles cases where deaths are involved.
The Econo Lodge in Wooster remains closed following the fire. Displaced guests were moved to other hotels in the area. It is not known when, or if, the motel will reopen, KIRO 7 reported.
Wooster is a city of roughly 27,000 people in Wayne County, in northeastern Ohio. Econo Lodge is a national budget motel chain. The company has not issued a public statement about the fire.
