"We The People" Documentary Spotlights Diverse Contributions to America's 250-Year Evolution

Gray Media's "We the People" documentary initiative is marking America's 250th birthday by collecting real stories from everyday Americans across the country. The project spans 113 television stations in 113 markets, reaching 37% of U.S. TV households, according to Gray Media.
Launched on December 11, 2025, the initiative features interviews with military members, government officials, and ordinary citizens. It aims to paint a grassroots picture of American history as the nation counts down to July 4, 2026 — the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Gray Media reported.
Gray Media's approach is modeled after Depression-era documentary projects that introduced "America to Americans." Sandy Breland, the company's Executive VP and COO, said the effort is about more than a date. "America 250 is not just about a date on the calendar; it's about who we are as a country," she said, according to NCS.
Executive Chairman Hilton Howell framed the goal simply: "As we approach this milestone, we want our communities to see themselves in the history of the United States," NCS reported. The initiative also launched a "Star-Spangled Sing-Off" competition on May 1, 2026, as part of its broader programming push, according to GlobeNewswire.
Not everyone agrees on how to celebrate 250 years. The original U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, set up by Congress in 2016, was designed to be non-partisan. But in 2025, the White House launched its own "Freedom 250" effort with a stronger presidential focus, according to Wikipedia.
Historian John Pitney pushed back on the White House approach. "This is a celebration of the Declaration of Independence... not about any president," he told The Washington Post. Critics have also noted that some musical acts pulled out of the "Great American State Fair" due to its close ties to the current administration's branding, according to AP News.
On May 14, 2026, the HISTORY Channel launched "Mission To Honor: A 250th Salute To American Veterans" in partnership with the White House. A+E Global Media President Paul Buccieri called it "a unifying national moment of gratitude," according to HISTORY Channel.
At the local level, civic programs are reaching over 250,000 students annually through the "We the People" civics competition run by the Center for Civic Education. Meanwhile, cities like Philadelphia are spotlighting Indigenous, Black, and immigrant voices that were historically left out of the founding story, according to Visit Philadelphia.
The official anniversary period runs from Memorial Day 2025 through the end of 2026, according to the State Department. Key events include the U.S. Army's 250th Anniversary Parade on June 14, 2025, and a UFC event at the White House on June 14, 2026, showing how celebrations have moved beyond traditional reenactments.
Netflix is also joining the moment, premiering "The American Experiment" documentary series on June 24, 2026. Harvard historian Jill Lepore, author of "We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution," contributes to the project, according to Netflix. With July 4 fast approaching, the debate over who gets to define America's story is only getting louder.
