EPA Proposes Easing Biden-Era Truck Emission Rules, Citing Industry Savings But Drawing Environmental Concern

The biggest operational change would end automatic power reductions — called "deratings" — when a truck's emissions system malfunctions. Right now, a truck can be forced to slow down automatically if its pollution controls fail. Under the new proposal, drivers would get an alert instead and keep full power, according to E&E News.
The plan would also scale back warranty requirements on emissions-control equipment and shorten the "useful life" period manufacturers must guarantee their pollution-reducing technology works. It would also give manufacturers more lead time before having to sell engines that meet the tougher 2027 standards, letting older models stay on the market longer, Transport Topics reported.

The proposal is now open for public comment before any final rule takes effect. Manufacturers are watching closely, since the 2027 compliance deadline is less than two years away.
