Legal experts say Butler's Autopilot claim may not protect him from criminal charges, including manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide.

This crash adds to a growing list of fatal incidents tied to Tesla's driver-assistance systems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has verified 65 fatalities linked to Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving since the technology launched. In December 2023, NHTSA forced Tesla to recall more than 2 million vehicles to improve driver-attention alerts, NewsBreak reported.
NHTSA escalated its investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving program in March 2026, focusing on failures in residential areas. Investigators will likely pull the Tesla's Event Data Recorder — a black box that logs steering, braking, and Autopilot status — to find out exactly what happened on Blooming Park Lane. Family Gets Crisis Support as Investigation Continues
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez deployed victim-crisis personnel to assist the victim's family after the crash. State victim compensation can cover up to $50,000 in medical and funeral costs for qualifying families, according to Covering Katy.
Neighbors in Westgreen Park said they were shaken by the speed involved. "There's no reason to be going that fast in a cul-de-sac neighborhood," one resident told reporters. Sheriff's officials said additional details would be released as the investigation moves forward. No arrest had been made as of Saturday afternoon, ABC News confirmed.
